What will happen if i use a k&n filter and put a stock Buell Race pipe on from an 03 firebolt on my 07 Uly? will the bike just run a little lean but be ok with a tps reset, or am i going to cause intermittent issues or long term affects on down the road? I hear of people saying they just threw a exhaust on and the their bike might sputter or cough while cruising and seems fine to them but i don't want to put on a buell Race pipe and it cause problems.
Any info or input would be great, let me know if im not in the right topic area or if this kind of question has already been answered in another thread.
THANKS

The K&N isn't a big deal, I doubt the bike will see any difference. So don't worry about that part of it.

The pipe is the bigger deal..

I think the XB9 and XB12 race pipes were different. I'm not even sure if it will bolt up (different collector sizes maybe?).

You would loose the flapper valve thingy, so you would be giving up either a little top end or creating a hole in the midrange.

Bad fueling is never good in terms of long term durability.

Why even mess with the exhaust? The micron systems (now long gone) got good solid performance gains, but most of the other pipes mainly create noise and fueling problems.

The 07's in particular had a pretty well sorted fueling system (ignoring a quick cough when it it goes from cold to normal) with the stock exhaust. I'd leave it be if I were you. (Putting on the K&N is harmless, that's OK).

Thanks for the reply Bill.
I just picked up Marks bike and rode back from dayton on the 5th. It's in excellent shape all around and i have to do what it takes, the right way to have the "noise" because i love it! lol.. I just don't want to mess up a good thing you know.
The pipes innards may be different from xb9-xb12 but the outside straps on good and chin fairing also on my old Uly. I'm hoping that with the ecmspy i could have my cousin flash a race map to my stock ecm or have my stock ecm modded somehow so i don't have to get the race ecm.
I don't need top speed at all, i mainly cruise i'm always in the country, or heavy highway riding.

Did you check the collector diameter, where the header goes into the exhaust? That is the bit I am thinking may be different.

If it fits, a race ECM (or an EBR tune for the race exhaust) would probably work well.

That would be another way to track it down... in 2005 was the XB12 and XB9 race pipe the same part number?

The pipe will bolt right up, but you will have issues with the kickstand clearance. Not a big deal, but just something to know. The difference between the XB9 and 12 race pipes was just the finish. TPS resets are not required for changing the exhaust, the two systems are completely unrelated.

Regarding the ECM - Running the stock ECM can cause issues with the check engine light as it is looking for the exhaust actuator. In addition to that, the bike is going to run lean and will cause long term damage being run that way. If you do change the pipe, getting it tuned or the ECM replaced is a must.

Personally I don't recommend the Race can, the power band on it sucks for the street, get a Drummer.
