My problem started with a bad cooling fan. I was sitting in traffic in Miami in the beginning of March. The cooling fan was running fine but when I stopped, got back on the bike, and started on my way the engine light came on. I waited until the sun went down, and broke my ride into segments of about 1 or 2 miles in 60 degree night time weather--letting the bike cool at every stop for 25min. It turned out the problem was the cooling fan was blowing fuses. (I replaced the cooling fan, and now no engine lights) However, when coming home that night I noticed a mild knocking, which has continued. Now, the engine does not want to idle nicely. It will sit at 1k rpms then every couple seconds drop like its going to quit. It never quits, but just drops the rpms and acts like its going to. I changed the oil and primary oil to Mobil 1 synthetic thinking this might help. After I changed the oil I noticed that once the bike got nice and warm the knocking stopped. Then when I started the bike again after letting it cool over night the knock is back. Any suggestions on what this might be. |

Big end bearing. It's not unknown for xb9 cranks to fail, just not as prevalent as 12's. Tear it down before it goes too far. |

So the big end bearing would explain why it knocks when its cold, but stops knocking when it gets hot? (I took it to the harley dealer, and they told me it was fine- just to put thicker oil in it next time- but it sounds awful) I would think if was a bearing problem that was caused by heat that it would knock all the time, and not only knock when its cold. Were it me, before I got too much further along, I would confirm the primary chain was properly adjusted. If that is OK, I would pull the primary cover and confirm that the crankshaft primary sprocket nut is tight. Once you are in there, it would be possible to check for excess play in the big end bearing by pulling the sparkplug and checking with a dial gauge. Could save an unneccesary tear down. Hope this helps, Dave |

So I tightened the primary chain. That was part of the knocking. But, it is still knocking when it is cold. But as soon as it warms up it runs super smooth. (The harley dealer still says it is the synthetic oil I put in it. They said to try SAE 60 next time, but that the thinner oil would not hurt it) I am going to check the crankshaft primary sprocket nut is tight the next time I change the oil. What size nut is the crankshaft primary sprocket nut? I will most likely have to buy a new wrench for it. |

Glad to hear it's not crank related. But keep a close watch on it anyway! |
