Alright, I bought a 2002 Buell Blast used a couple of weeks ago (my first bike) I think I may have made the ultimate newbie mistake and got caught up in the moment, and failed to analyze any problems. And ultimately ended up with a bike I love, but it's sputtering out and impossible to ride. In short here's my problems, They may not be related but I don't know Sh** about motorcycles, so I'll lay it all out for you. -When I put my key in and turn it, I have to have it just right (a little to the left from fully turned) in order for my spedo/display to turn on. it flickers a little but not coinciding with my sputtering problem. -My stock paper air filter is a little on the dirty side, and the box that it's in (I know like I said I know almost nothing) appears to have gas coating the inside. -When I first test drove the bike it ran fine. I hauled it home and went to fire it up and it took a couple of tries to fire it up. It seemed to Idle fine, but while in neutral when I let go of the clutch it would die. I drove it up and down the road about a mile or so and at random times (all gears, all speeds, all rpm's) it would sputter, seem like it was loosing power (more/less throttle didn't seem to affect it) and then it would kick back up again, like it got a sudden burst of power. It would ride fine for a few more minutes, then do the same thing again. I got back to the house killed the engine and tried to fire it back up again, and it wouldn't start!!! I tried a few more times then heard a pop while trying, I looked down and saw a white smoke or steam coming from the air filter box. Extremely pissed, I parked it and did some research online and decided to blow any excess dirt off of the air filter with compressed air. Didn't help. I let it sit a couple of days while I tried to do more research, and came up with about a thousand possible problems. Then today I got back on it to try and keep it running for a little longer so maybe some more defining symptoms would arise. I got on, started it in about two tries, let it warm up for about three minutes, put it in first and headed out the driveway. I didn't get but about 50ft or so until it started loosing power, sputtering, jumping a bit, with no help from the throttle. I stopped at the stop sign and it died. I started it back up and took off again and got about 100ft and it started doing it again, like it would just die while riding, then suddenly start running again with a little jump. After about fifteen seconds of that it just died, I tried starting it back up again and it wouldn't start. So depressed I pushed it the 150ft back home. It's got gas in the tank. It does this with the petlock in both positions, and in any weather. I know It may not be much to go on, but any ideas what my problem could be??? thanks |

John, Here is a couple of things that you can try until one of the more experienced guys home in on your problem. The next time it stalls open the gas cap to let some air into the tank and then close the cap before you attempt to ride the bike. And check the wire connecting to the spark plug and check the plug for fouling. Kenny G |

The key switch sounds real weird (replace?)and check the side stand switch also or jumper it. |

Well fellows, Thank you so much for the replies. Did I mention I have no knowlege at all of motorcycles. Well, this goes a little further than that. I'll start by saying i'm an idiot to save you the time. I was driving a friend home last night. (not on the bike) griping about my bike troubles, and he says to me, "you sure you got gas in there" I looked at hime and said, "of course I do". But on the way home I couldn't get that thought out of my head. And was laughing to myself a bit about the possibility. I just bought the bike, andthe guy I bought it from said"Don't worry aboutfillin her up for a while, just did it." and he went on to tell me only use premium blah blah blah. Well I got bacl home and sat on my bike and leaned it from side to side to feel for a slosh. And there was a little so I decided to test my luck and push it the 500 ft down the road to the gas station and put 2 gallons in the tank. Been riding it all day not a sigle problem. So like I said Thank you. And I obviously have a lot to learn. |

Johnglover, just to be on the safe side check the oil tank to make sure there is no gas in there. If the previous owner said he just put gas in the tank before you bought it he was obviously mistaken, lied or the gas leaked out of the tank past the petcock. |

There hasn't been any wet spots or leaks on the cement and the oil looks good. I think they guy may have been mistaken about the last time he filled up. |
