I'm getting ready to replace the clutch, and have looking through the site at various post, and have discovered lots of great knowledge, but now, before I get started, some people on this site have a lot of experience with a lot of Buells I have an 02 M2 put over 30k mi in one year on it love it needs a new clutch. I asked about my exhaust last time and got lots of outstanding feedback that has been in practice since. I am also in the "product improvement" club as in everything I do has to be better then what I had, if I'm in there might as well do it better. Anything special for the clutch other then heavier clutch spring, etc?
Thanks in advanced.

What makes you think you need a new clutch?
The Buell clutches are quite tough.

I'm going to lurk on this thread, because I at least need to replace the clutch cable this spring, (fraying)and was also considering replacing the clutch at the same time.

Are they tough? I would think that would depend whether or not they contain the grenade plate (spring plate).

And whether or not they have a pattern of failures like on the late-model Sportsters.

I was under the impression the answer to both was yes, but maybe I just haven't read enough threads.

Well acceleration is not as great on the power, the RPM's tend to creep up but the speed doesn't seem to as quick. Tough? Yes no doubt about that, however in full disclosure I've had a few issues in the past, one being the bolt that allows the shifter to pivot was lost on the Freeway (recovered I may add), and was stuck in 5th gear (not good for clutch). @ Kev_m are you talking about the shift detent plate? If so, yes that has also gone off like a grenade as well. Clutch cable is fairly simple, take care of the piece that goes into the primary its glass, and adjust to your liking

Oh, and I smelled it racing a car on a Tx freeway after going shooting. Still faster when slipping ; )

No, I'm talking about the Spring Plate in the middle of the stack of friction discs and steel plates.

It's two steel plates held apart by leaf springs. The whole assembly is riveted together, but the rivets tend to shear, drop, and groove/damage the basket.

It's a big problem on late-model Sportsters, and I'm under the impression happens on early-model Buells too.

Yes the grenade plate can be an issue. I've replaced it on all my Buell's with 2 metal and one fiber plate.
30,000 on a clutch isn't a lot if it hasn't been beat or abused.
