My '08 XB12Ss gets used for commuting and spirited riding... has about 30,000 miles on it now. Recently, I've been getting some CELs turning on and off intermittently while riding and when I'm parked and check the codes I'm getting 16 (battery voltage) and 34 (IAC). I've been having issues starting the bike as well.
I pulled the IAC, cleaned it up, and reinstalled it. Idle definitely seems better. I don't think that's the main issue, though. I replaced the stock HD battery with a Ballistic EVO2 16-cell lithium ferrite. Worked great for 2 months. Since the temperature has dropped considerably during the winter time, starting has become difficult. I reinstalled the stock HD AGM battery and starting performance is much better.
I recently did a datalog from Phoenix to Tucson, which is a solid 130 miles via backroads at a variety of speeds. Looking at the datalogs, I can see that my battery voltage appears to be fluctuating rapidly between 14-16V and I've got the occasional extended period of time where it spikes all the way up to 18V for almost 20 seconds!
My bike is equipped with an HID for low beam and halogen H7 for high beam. I've been blowing out my H7s within a few days of riding and the HID is cutting out occasionally. Is this a classic indicator that the VR has gone south? |

18V? Probably is a symptom of a failure to regulate (either because the regulator is bad, or it's grounding or connections are bad). |

A failing voltage regulator is the usual culprit for your systems. It is very easy to change out. |

I can check the 77 connector, but I think the 2008 and newer XBs came with an upgraded wiring harness for the regulators to specifically address that issue. I've also added several additional ground straps to the electrical system because I had some grounding related sensor float issues when the system was stock.
What's the best way to verify regulator function? I have the offical factory manual, but I don't have the electrical troubleshooting manual. |

Do you folks think the Compufire 55150 single phase VR is a good upgrade to the '08+ XBs? |
