Hello everybody,

I just purchased a '97 S3. I love the bike, but hate the handlebars (probably my rice-bike heritage). I was wondering if any of you knew if any accessory companies produce a set of clip-ons for my ride that will clear the tank.

Thanks,

Yelvis111

Yelvis: I just lucked into a '97 M2 that has some of the best multi adjustable clip-ons I've ever seen. Can't recall the brand. I'll check the documentation on them tonight and get back to you. I do remember that they are a W. German brand. Maybe someone else can identify them for us. They are adjustable in length/width, height, roll, and yaw. Poor quality pics below attempt to show you the bars.

Hey all,

A while back somebody mentioned the Zenrail (www.zenrail.com) Which is a bar with bungee points on it. I had (along with probably others out there) to make one for the Buell. Well he just posted his prototype on his website. Go check it out because I think that it will help you.

Shameless advertising over,
Brad

Yelvis, I posted the clip-on pics on the "Ergonomics" page.

Blake:
Do you want me to send you a .pdf file / Buell parts and accessories bulletin 025 ?? . It's 6 pages covering all parts and mounting hardware for converting S2'S to S3 style saddlbags. I tried to email it to you yesterday but the message was returned. A few S2 owners have requested that I send them the file and they now have it , but it does deserve a place here.

Blake,
reading thru your packing list I find:
"Luggage/Packstuff:
•Ventura Aerodynamic Bike Pack System with grab handle
•Buell M2 soft bags"

How did you connect the cross-support plate that came with the Buell-brand saddlebags? Did you add it to the stackup of the Ventura crossbar attachment? Or did you not use the saddlebag plate and add straps to the rear instead? Or something else?

I looked at my setup and it looked like the bags rear support plate would interfere (sp?) with the rack assembly. I was thinking of just adding straps to the rear of the saddlebags similar to the RKA setup, but got the RKA's and haven't messed with the Buell bags since.

Thanks,
Mike.

Mike: I don't use the bag bracketry. Never have. A bungee works fine to secure bags from forward movement. Sometimes I don't even use a bungee; the bag straps and the friction coating work darn well on their own (cinch 'em down tight).

The bungee goes around the rack and each hook grabs onto the same side loop at the seat level where the bag intersects the saddle.

OK....since dealers are telling folks this doesn't exist, I shall once again wax logorrheic and risk invoking the ire of the HD legal machine in an effort to set the record straight.

I'll spare you the WHY's about the maladies of the S3 Hard Bags and we'll dwell on the postive. Is it just me, or am I starting to sound like a self-help by the way...would one of you explain to me what a "self-help GROUP" is??? book in my sunset years?

Onward and upward.....

SUMMARY: The most frequently occuring difficulty can be alleviated with a slightly longer cam. The spare hinges are included in the kit as many of the bags failed in a closed mode and the hindge had to be cut to commence the fix.

Any questions, e-mail me and we'll get you fixed up pronto. Hope this helps.

Noted yesterday that the frame side of the saddle bags on my 98 S3T have cracked on both sides towards the top. Did I hear about a recall or fix on these things about a year ago? Can't recall. Anyway, do you think the Motor Company would take care of this as a defect?

Larry:
Drop by your Dealer and show them your problem and ask them to contact BMC about replaceing the inner bags. When I had my S3T there were 3 sets that cracked. You do need to make sure that there is not too much outward preload on the bags by the bracket under the license plate.

If this tactic fails give me a shout and we can go onto plan 2.

Later

Lars:

What you are looking for.....I am betting is the "bases".

These are the black parts that form the body of the bag and the lids attach to.

Big Picture

Parts numbers are as follows:

Left (looking at bike from rear)
HD Part No. 91253-97YB
Buell P/N M1020.bb
Nomenclature: S-Bag, Back, Left

Right (looking at bike from rear)
HD Part No. 91254-97YB
Buell P/N M1021.bb
Nomenclature: S-Bag, Back, Right

STANDARD CAVEAT: This is my PERSONAL best guess. In an effort to get SOME knowledge out there, I'm giving you a starting place. I am NOT an employee of Buell and do NOT have my parts manual with me today. I am GUESSING off my customer service notes. Ergo: PLEASE CONFIRM THE ABOVE INFORMATION WITH AN AUTHORIZED HD/BUELL DEALER.

Addendum: Excuse crummy pic. Best "rear view" I had.

Note: What I call the "base", Buell calls the "back"

It's still unclear to me if installing S3 mounting hardware and hard bags is something feasible or not on a 00 M2. Somebody having experience of this ? I don't have schematics on how the S3 bags are installed on the S3 models (and the S3 doesn't exist anymore on the European market). Would there be a need for welding additional mounting points on the M2 frame ? Is the frame much different ? Would the S3 mounting hardware be eventually compatible with a Ventura luggage rack hardware or is there an overlap on the frame space ? Thanks in advance for your input.

Jerome you need to do a bit of welding for bag supports.

We've been over this before & I posted pics of my S3 when the tail was off. Do the archives go back that far?

Places to stick stickers: I've got my '00 M2 with the little flyscreen, I've also got at least two stickers I sort of need to affix to the bike (state park pass and national park pass). The instructions state to place the stickers on the inside of the windshield in the lower left corner, but two problems there: I got a bike, and I got no windshield or clear fairing.

I'm thinking of clamping on a flat piece of clear plexiglass or something down below the headlight or someplace that won't interfere with anything. I also momentarily thought of adding a clear extension to the top of the flyscreen to stick the stickers to and to add a little more wind deflection (more bounce to the bugs).

I'm looking for ideas and such. It would sure be nice to just get waved thru the gates instead of having to dig around in my pocket for the stickers and go thru the routine of asking the gate guards of where they want me to stick the stickers.

Thanks,
Mike.

I made a small monuting plate out of a plastic oil container. It's mounted to the front fork with a fender mounting screw and a tie wrap. Not elaborate, billet aluminum or carbon but it works. Hmmm ... maybe I could market this hand-crafted "Pass Mounting System". Nawwwww ... the acronymn would kill it. ;-)

really really cheap i mean inexpensive pass mounting system

In the South Africa and the UK, motorcycles are required to carry and display a couple of passes/tags etc.

Thay have a great little round disk thingymajig that bolts anywhere on the bike. I am sure if you ask Rocketman UK very nicely, he will send you one.
