So I had a bad spill back in June. Finally got all the parts to fix it, and get it all together, get it running, and then take it down the block to test it out, and I can't get out of first/neutral.

The shift pin (?) was undamaged, the shifter assembly that bolts to it was gone, minus the "knuckle" that the adjusted bolts to. The primary was probably salvageable but I put a new one on.

So some back story. The bike has been through some traumatic scenes.
June 2012 40 mph left handed low-side. New primary cover, shifter linkage assembly, clutch lever and mirror good to go.
June 2013 (I swear June is a cursed time) 70-75 mph, left handed low/high(?) side wreck. This is the crash I'm finally healing from and got the bike back together from and now I have my problem.

So anything else you may wonder please ask!

Sounds like a pretty good crash, hope your healing is progressing well.

The cases are stout, but I suppose they could bend a little, and you gave them a heck of a shot. So maybe the bolt points for that "inside the primary shifter shaft assembly" are not quite true. Seems unlikely though.

You replaced the primary cover, so it doesn't seem like it could be that. Unless the whole case was screwed up somehow, which seems impossible.

What about install process? Did you put all the primary cover bolts finger tight, then cycle the shifter a bit, then gradually torque them going in a circle?

Could you have put the seal in wrong and bound it up that way?

Is the shifter pawl adjusted right?

Is the little clip retainer on the cam plate thingy that mounts to the shifter drum right? Could that cam plate thingy have been damaged?

Beyond that, things get scarier. It implies that in the process of ripping apart the shifter and primary in your accident, you bent a fork or did some other internal damage. Fixable, but it means splitting the cases. Hopefully it won't come to that.

Reepidcheep,
thank you for the reply! A lot of good things. Healing is coming along, thank you for mentioning. Yeah the new primary went on with easy, except there is one bolt on the top right of the case that seemed a little bit off, as in it seemed to tighten too soon, but we gently got it in torqued them all. I will need to check the other suggestions to offered, I will try and get to it tomorrow and I will let you know.

Although I'm sure this is one of the things you said the actual shifter assembly inside, behind the clutch there are "teeth" for up/down and springs, so I was planning on taking it apart and looking at that. Also you're suggestions are a great start! Thanks again! Talk soon.

Glad you are healing up. It takes a while... I fractured a pelvis... once past that first 3 weeks there was no single moment that was terrible, but the daily exhausting grind of discomfort and inconvenience can really wear you down. Just keep swimming. : )

If you didn't replace that whole internal shifter assembly, that could definately be the culprit... if those hooks are bent, or the pins on the shifter drum is bent, or that little cam thingy that is the detents for which gear you are in is messed up, that would do it.

Happy hunting!

Yeah it took me longer than I wanted (National Guards weekend) but I finally got out there yesterday and took the primary cover back off. Looking in the top spring loaded hook on the shifter had the spring unhooked from the top. Something isn't right with it so tomorrow hopefully I will be able to get into it and take the clutch assembly out of the way to get a better look.

Well pulled the clutch assembly back (removed the nut and kept the engine sprocket on) and I could see the spring loaded part on the shifter assembly had gotten flipped around somehow. All other parts looked good and so flipped it back around and reinstalled everything and I have put a few miles on it running and shifting like a dream. Hoping to put a lot more on starting tomorrow! Thanks for the support Reepicheep!!
