I have a guy who is looking to trade his 2003 XB9S buell for my 88 K5 chevy blazer. The Buell is in pristine condition other than the fact it was dropped doing a wheelie : (. It has had 3 owners, 2 mature adults and 1 wild kid (the wheelie attempter). The damage from the wheelie is quite minimal. The biggest thing is the headers are dented and the front brake rotor is warped but the guy said he'll through cash on top to cover the brake rotor. He said he's had it for a year with the dented headers and hasn't had a problem with it, I would like to replace them in the future though. The good is that he has all the reciepts from its services since day 1. Bike rode great, sounded great and was overall very clean. The mileage is about 28,xxx. I think my main concern is the headers, how exstensive of a repair is that? Do I have to drop the entire engine? Right now I am leaning on getting it because I feel like I am getting a good trade. Let me know if you guys would have any advice or pointers on this.
I should also put some info about myself. This is not my first motorcycle or Buell for that matter, my first bike was a Blast that i got in 2011 then upgraded to a CBR 929rr in early 2012. Unfortunatley it was a stolen motorcycle and the police repoed it : ( so I have been bikeless since early 2012. I am not a great mechanic, I can do basics such as brakes and sprockets and chains and on the blast I replaced the rocker gaskets and various other small things. Please let me know what you all think! Thanks!

Dented headers from a right side drop is pretty common, it doesn't affect anything nor is it unsafe, so typically I just recommend leaving it.

If your heart is dead set on changing the header, it will be some work. You don't have to remove the entire motor, but do you basically have to remove half of it to gain access to the rear head.

Good to know, I guest its just an aesthetic thing. Could I wrap the pipes to cover it up? Also if i did replace it would a header for an xb12s work? I can't find any for the xb9s. Thanks!

Header wrap would work fine, but it would look like header wrap. Which may or may not appeal to you.

Replacement would mean rotating the engine. Lots of steps and tools, but not rocket science. Doable but a challenge if I'm interpreting your current experience level. Worth it if you want to become more of a wrench anyway. Not worth it if you don't have an interest in making that a hobby.

The 9 is probably the most durable motor to ever be put on a Buell. It really was a sweet spot for the XB family. It's a shame the turbo version never saw the light of day.

The XB12 header, while it would fit and work, is different and will affect power output. The 12 uses a wider diameter pipes. If I was going to swap the header, I would get custom headers from Dean Adams (and a matching muffler)
