I've been chasing this for a while and searched much to no avail.

Need some helpful input,

My ecm-spy program won't communicate properly with my X1. When I initially plug in the cord, and pull the info from the cpu, it only "pings" for information and won't allow me to monitor the TPS or data as it changes.

It will get a reading from the tps and sensors once, but not change, like when I move the throttle.

I'm stuck. I'm fairly certain it's a wiring issue with the bike, and not the program. But I'm totally open to suggestions.

When I pull codes, I consistently get "low voltage" and IIRC it was pulling an injector code as well as an intermittent temp sender code as well. I'll pull them again and post if it will help. I've checked all the grounds, new battery with clean connections as well.

Just asking, but are you clicking on the ECMspy "keys" in the top left corner? If you don't activate the keys, the program will not communicate with your bike.

Also, make sure your kill switch isn't off... make sure it's in the run position.

Well now I feel like a retard.

I wasn't hitting the keys apparently.

I've having some other issues and was hoping the ecm spy would narrow them down. I'll update as I get more information. This bike is a pig, and it's pissing me off.

Ok. Pulled Codes:

No "Current codes"

Historic codes shows #14 ETS short to supply voltage and #23 Battery voltage low.

I'm having a problem only on warm restart, where it's difficult to start, and once it does, it struggles to idle until the check engine light comes on, after about 15/20 seconds, then it smooths out and is normal. Almost feels like it's an enrichment issue. Is this consistent with the ETS code?

Had a good night. Got a chance to tear down and run over some things with the service manual and the volt meter. Everything tested good while cold, but once bike came up to temp, I was able to lightly wiggle the lead going into the ECT and get it to go to ground. I'll order a new unit and hopefully get it installed shortly.

I had to replace both my engine temp sensor and the O2 sensor to get it to run right.

Runs great now.

Are you familiar with American Sport Bike?

The ETS will make it run like crap. I worked on an X1 a while back, that was the problem.
Replaced it and did a TPS reset and the bugger ran better than ever.

I'm convinced that the damned head temp sensor causes more bad running issues than all the rest of the sensors combined. It shouldn't, the physics of the device is simple enough. But the way it is constructed leads to way too many failures, especially on 99 X1 and S3 models where it isn't in the center of the head.

We have a few in stock, see http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17035.html

I replaced my 02 with a bosch unit sometime last spring.

Here's a rundown on the bike and problems:

Bought about 3 years ago, with a back-yard fabbed glass pack slip on pipe, gutted airbox with K&N and a race tune computer. Bike came with Power commander setup in a box and ECM spy cable attached. Rode it for awhile, and got sick of my fingers going numb and felt like the bike was "holding back", so I started investigating and playing with the ecm spy setup. Swapped out computers for the OEM unit that came with it, no change as it had a race tune in it as well. Got stock eeproms and tune from the boards and uploaded. Vibrations got alot better, but has a stutter while cruising and has no power from 3K to 4500 rpm, then it pulls pretty decent to redline. Installed the stock pipe thinking that the glass pack was restrictive, which leads me to now. I really didn't mind the sound of that other pipe though and didn't really notice much difference.

Rode like that most of last season, when I found a V&H slip on which I have yet to install. Still trying to figure out the stutter, and warm restart issue, which I firmly believe the ECT sensor should fix.

I just use it for a short ride bike around town most of the time. But it won't pull the front wheel in 1st gear without some serious effort. It's got some issues somewhere.

I've trolled on the sportbike website several times gathering information. Great site.

I've got a close buddy that owns/operates an independant shop and need to spend my money there. He's pretty salty at tuning carbs, but is totally lost on the FI tuning stuff. Keeps begging me to put the commander on it or carb it and make it haul ass!.......

I'm excited to go over the ECM spy setup with him.

Buy a new ETS and go from there. I'd bet that will fix what ailes your ride.

Get a good heat soak, idling, then do a TPS reset, (make sure the throttle is all the way backed out at the idle set screw, check it a couple of times to be sure). Once reset, run the idle screw up to about 5.1 degrees, start it, then let it idle some more, take it out and keep it between 2k rpm and 3.5k rpm.

Report back and let us know.

Will do.

Any resources on interchange for this ECS? I've done a TON of trolling around and seems as though it's a buell specific part. Fuel pump and tps were ford interchange, as well as several other parts that Buell used as off the shelf items such as O2 sensors. Odd that they would design and use a specific sensor on basically all the FI models.

Just curious more than anything.

+1 on replacing the engine temp sensor. They can go wonky or shift calibration without throwing an ETS code. Besides the crappy running, another symptom of ETS issues are multiple failure codes. Been there, done that. And thanks to Al for his information and help.

As to the buddy at the indy shop about the commander: most folks here have had mixed success with 'add on' inline ECU tuners. Things tend to be OK for a while, then the learning mode in the stock ECU starts fighting with the add on tuners. Usually solved by removing the add on tuner.

Hope this helps, Dave

I try to learn from other peoples mistakes whenever possible. I find it's less irritating and saves buckets of money. lol

For the ETS, Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike can help you. Great resource.
