I'm in the market for an XB12X. The bike really appeals to me but I'm really scared of buying one. I need a reliable machine because I have gotten into touring these past few yrs. I had a VFR that was as reliable as can be, but I'm reading all these horror stories of bad bas, ecm, tps, cps, fuel pump, belt, fan, broken wires, etc, etc, etc on Buells. When I travel, I have very little extra money on hand and breaking down is a real fear.

There's a 2006 xbx for sale 600 miles away that I'm considering, but I'm starting to wonder if a Buell is a wise choice.

What do you guys think I should do?? I'm looking for some peace of mind or a strict warning here.

If you like the bike, and it looks cared for and has a good service history, go for it.

Judging a Uly's reliability by posts here is not necessarily a good indicator. Most posts involve problems; the many, many other owners who do not have problems don't usually post up. Kind of like deciding if a city is healthy or not by only going to the hospital emergency room.

If worrying about what could go wrong will eat at you and you must have a completely incident free ownership experience, you probably want something a lot bigger, heavier, lower performing, and less interesting than a Buell.

Maybe an ST1300, a Concours, a gold wing, or maybe a Tercel or an Accord (far more reliable than even the best motorcycles).

The 2008-2010 Uly's are a bit better sorted than the 06/07 bikes.

All would serve well as a tourer though... just pack a few spare bits on longer trips and know your bike and it's condition.

Also be sure to pack the RAN list!
