I am looking for a Uly, but had a great time a while ago on a BMW R1200GS, that is until I found out how much they cost. However the used market is doing just fine on both models as far as availability goes.I have heard the BMW has issues with a main component, I forget which, and a few sellers I have contacted tell me about electrical gremlins. I love the honesty, but I am no mechanic by any stretch. I am partial to Uly because I tested one after buying my Harley, and loved it. But electrical issues scare me, the expensive kind of scared. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I think I have narrowed down between an 07 BMW, or an 09 Uly XT. OK sound off!

Radically different bikes, look at each, price each, and ride each, and the answer to your question should be incredibly obvious to you. Both are very polarizing bikes, but the moment you are ready to write the check I think it will be obvious.

Either choice will be a good one, so its a preference thing, not a logic thing.

The BMW problem was a final drive problem... they hardly ever seize up and catch on fire. : (

That being said, they fail less than Buell bearings, so that's not the reason not to go with a BMW. Both the BMW and Buell problems are straightforward to prevent and work around with a little discipline.

The other wild card is resale value. The BMW is stupid expensive, but so far, resale value is stupid high as well. So while you have a lot invested, you may get a lot back. Unless the bottom falls out of the market, which is a really big risk, as a big part of the GS price premium is that it is trendy. And they have a LOT of challangers these days (Super Tenere, new Vstrom, KTM, Triumph, etc).

And who knows what the "Uly Unleashed" adventure bike from EBR will be two years from now. It could be a game changer, which won't make the BMW a worse bike, but it could make your resale value tank.

Anyway, it will be a preference thing, there is no universal wrong answer, but there will very likely be a wrong answer for you.

For me, a $5000 Uly has been more bang for a buck than I would have ever thought possible. I expect I would love the GS as well, but I would never be able to get past the price. Even if the bike was a gift, knowing it was so expensive would just suck all the fun out of it for me. I love feeling like I'm getting away with something every time I jump on the Uly... I love the "how can something so cheap be so good" feeling.
