Silly question, as always. I'm loving the braking power on an '09 XB12 and was told this may be due to the difference between the 6 piston calipers on pre-'09 Buells, and the 8 piston calipers on the newer ones. I'm looking to invest in better brakes for my '03 XB9R, and was wondering if there's a difference between the rear brakes on my bike and the '09 I was test driving. Should I just replace my 6 piston caliper front brake with an 8 caliper and call it a day, or replace the rear brake as well? I have brand new brake pads installed and don't do any crazy driving, just liked how much more aggressive the stop was on the '09.

The rear brake is the same on all XB models.

I have a mix of 6 and 8 piston bikes, I do love the 8, it just plain stops better. I would get the 8 piston kit and call it a day. Also if you do switch, get a custom brake line that is extra long, it will make tire changes easier. With the 8 piston caliper, you need to disconnect it from the fork so that the wheel can clear it, with an extra long line you can disconnect it, rotate it out of the way and easily remove it from the wheel.

American Sport Bike has a kit to upgrade the rear brake system if you really desire, but I would put the money elsewhere.
