I bought the bike with no compression and tore it down and found the piston half chewed up with a broken ring , cylinder and head damage. Then I had head cleaned and shaved, the cylinder bored and installed .10 over piston/ring and changed oil ect. It had a slight tick and intake backfire that would kill it at times (Same as now) and I ignored it and I took the bike for a ride around the neighborhood with no problems until I hit the road after 10 miles it began to tighten up, lose power and when I shift up it would bog while the ticking got louder and more intense, I stopped and turned off the ignition, it kept running. I had to place it in gear and let the clutch out to kill it. I put gas in it and started it again. At this point it would only go about 20 mph in second gear if I went to third gear it would bog and slow down. Finally It stalled out and then had no compression. I tore it down again and found that the head had blown off a chunk and the small valve was stuck open (bent) and the spark plug had welded into the head. no oil in the rocker box and the it smelled like burnt oil but was dry. The cylinder and the rings had no damage. but the piston had scaring on the top corner but did not affect the integrity. I replaced the head, used a piston groove cleaner and cleaned the first compression ring grove and lightly honed the cylinder, changed the oil again. Inspected the oil pump and found no issues. Put it all back together and it will only start with starting fluid and burps back thru the carburetor. I took the carburetor apart and found some small trash in the bowl and the center jet in the carburetor was dirty so I cleaned it. and it started but soon died.

At this point this is why the same noise in the top end and no oil in the rocker box concerns me. As far as the burp in the carburetor I don’t think it is a timing issue because I lined up the marks exactly as shown on the photos at TDC. Any insight would be great. Thanks again.

Hope I did not miss anything

Was this by chance the one that was listed in the Greensboro/Winston Salem area craigslist?

I suppose we could speculate that there was latent valve damage from the original holed piston, and that's what caused the second valve failure.

But that doesn't explain the lack of oil. You said you checked the oil pump, was the oil pump pinion gear OK?

And there must be other issues as well if the think kept running after you hit the kill switch.

Sounds like "death by previous owner". Been there, done that, with 4 different Kawasaki dirt bikes.

My approach was "check and fix everything". I literally had to assume everything that was touched by the PO was wrong, and that everything not touched might be worn out.

If you aren't in a hurry, it's a great way to learn about the bike. Take everything apart, clean it up and inspect it, and reassemble it back again right.

If this is the bike I'm thinking it was, it was advertised as just needing some head work, but I agree with Reep that you should go over the whole bike to see what else might be wrong.

If you need some help, I'm right down the road.

You shoulda seen the KDX-200 I bought that was advertised as "ready to ride!". LOL. I don't think there was any single part of that bike that didn't need to be either repaired or replaced. It was perfect for me though, as the goal of buying it was to keep me from riding while my ACL repair healed.

It was a safe move, that KDX was going NOWHERE without about a month of weekends of work.
