My fingers were too stubby/weak to compress that f**king thing by themselves, and I didn't have a big enough set of pliers to do it, so I used a medium sized zip-tie around the tabs and tightened it while squeezing, to hold it in the mostly-compressed state. I could then get the pliers I did have on there to finish the job. When It's in place, just cut the zip-tie, and Bob's yer uncle!

That's a great idea. I've just had to do remove the rubber velocity stack on my Lightning. Luckily, I had a pair of pliers which would expand to do the trick. I'll keep the zip tie idea for next time.
