04 XB12R --Bike makes loud bobbling sound below the cylinders-- took into a shop they said it might be a crank shaft problem --it was a honda shop said it would cost atleast $1200--to replace shaft IF that was the problem -- not sure what to do
rode it today it actually rides fine -- sound slighty disappears at high speeds.
think the sound started when I high shifted a couple of times
what do you think the problem is?? |

Loose crankshaft nut that holds primary sprocket. |

Thanks - how do i get to that -- im using the service manual -- is that on the right side crankcase or on the left side (side of the shifter? |

Left side. Primary cover is on the left, cams are on the right. The front sprocket is conventional right-hand thread and the clutch basket nut is left-hand thread. Your primary chain may just be loose. Adjust it before tearing into the case. |

Make sure to use the new torque specs..
Used to be 190Ft-lbs, now its 240 ft-lbs.
Use LocTite Red.
Make sure to only use a little. Threads only.
If you use too much and it gets into the splines you WILL play hell trying to get the rotor off next time. (DAHIK).

If it is a loose crankshaft nut, the sound will have a kind of "ring" to it, and lightly loading the clutch at idle (not enough to move the bike, just enough to drag a little) will make the sound go away.

well just an update
I took my buell to a harley dealership (which I didn't really want to do cause I thought they would over charge and they are usually snobby to me cause im young and have a sport bike) BUT they were awesome!!! right when I described what was going on on the bike they knew exactly what was wrong with it, fixed it in 15 minutes and only charged me $130 i guess for labor! and were very professional and nice!! the best part was the honda mechanic said it would cost more than the bikes worth to fix it and was just dissing buell -- but he was completely wrong!!
