I am thinking of picking up a salvage title 09 XB12X ULYSSES and turning it into a racebike. Only problem is that I can run a lot more classes if it were an xb9.

I believe that they (xb9 & xb12) share many engine parts so question is;
can you turn a xb12 engine into a xb9 easily?
Crank, rods, pistons and cylinders?

Same throttle bodies?
New chip for sure or whole new brain?

and yes I know you think I'm nuts : )

The stroke is the difference between the 9 and 12, so you would need crank, rods, and pistons. They use the same heads, cylinders, cases, throttle body, and pretty much anything else. You will need to either reprogram the stock ECM or you can get a nice XB9 Race ECM from Erik Buell Racing.

To be honest, I'd try and find a XB9R or 9S if possible, it will be cheaper and less to worry about : )

All the stuff you want will need to be out of an 08+ bike. 08 was a big change for the XB models including a new bottom end and fuel injection system. There was also a lots of other smaller changes too at 2008.

One thing to make you aware of, the Ulysses has a longer wheelbase than the Firebolt and most Lightnings, you can swap the swingarm to shorten it up a little bit, which will help with the flickability. Also, the Uly is a bit raked out compared to the other bikes, but there is no easy fix for that short of custom trees, the Firebolt/Lightning trees will not mount up without modification. Also, the Uly is quite a bit taller than the rest, so I assume you will want to put in shorter forks and springs.

How badly wrecked was this? By any chance is there a second one of these sub grand bikes laying around? : D

haven't seen it yet, buddy of mine is the middle man. It's at a wrecker. Find out more tomorrow, just doing some day before research.

Sounds like front end. Figured i would put in a chain swinger anyhow but bummer about the the rake difference, thought the frames were the same. That might be the deal braker.

The difference with the trees is the left to right stopper thing, it is mirrored on the Uly, so putting a Firebolt tree on won't work without grinding off the stoppers. I don't know why they did this, but I'm sure the Buell engineers had a legit reason for it. The difference in rake isn't huge, but it is understandable to want the shorter rake for the track.

Also regarding the frames, the Uly frame is physically larger than the Firebolt/Short Lightning frame, and has a higher fuel capacity.
