Wny not put the chart in the announcement area? That way there is no cutting and pasting, you can edit and add a line.

One thing I forgot. I had the same damed crankshaft problem with my 1992 Sorty. It was a 883, bumped up to a 1200. That bike was a pain in the neck. But it was my first Harley and I loved that bike dearly.

In my "my Uly sounds terminal" thread I posted photos from a failed Sportster crank I found in a Sportster forum. Apparently the problem is not exclusive to Buells.

For mine, I'd change it from TBD to failed.

I won't ride it making that much noise, and it's been sitting for almost a year.
I had to "move on", as much as I enjoyed the virtues of the Uly.

PM me here or at AdvRider.com if anyone might be looking for a "project bike".

Great, looks like somebody already fixed it Harleywern, my apologies for the typo.

Thanks Froggy. I see it.

First post here! Just bought a ’07 Uly with 16k on it. Build date 2006/09. This thread grabbed my attention! So, is there any kind of percentage numbers on the failed rate? Something like 3 in every 100 built blows a crank? Just wondering what I’m up against here.

Thanks for the effort to list.

According to the chart before adding your bike, we have a 27.27% failure rate. If we can find more 07 owners to post, it would help improve the numbers and give a better feel for actual failures which I personally will say should be around 10%.

I think that, perhaps, the more useful percentage would be that of bikes that made it past 40k miles (or thereabouts) without failure, but too few have that sort of mileage to learn much. The fact that a bike with say 3k miles didn't fail doesn't tell us much about whether it will suffer premature crank failure. If you just throw out all the "ok" bikes under 30k miles then re-calculate you get what looks to be about a 67% failure rate, though I suspect there's a selection bias in responders to this thread.

That data ain't pretty. I'm sitting on the edge of a an ugly cluster. 10k to 20k miles from now will tell a lot for us 2007 owners.

Time to start saving pennies for possible eventual crank work.

I'm not waiting - I sent an oil sample to Blackstone Labs to see if there is any sign of excessive bearing wear.

I should know by next week - I'll have to see. Waiting for a failure will be pricier to fix.

At $25.00...testing the oil every 6-months might be a good routine.

Let me know how your experience is with Blackstone. I am having both Blackstone and Amsoil do oil analysis on the oil that came in my new 2012 vehicle.

It get's it's first oil change this weekend. Eager to see how the two compare.

"

That's funny you mentioned that - I was going to have both do mine as well, and see which I preferred. I have yet to receive my Amsoil kit.

Blackstone sends the kit free, then you send them a check w/ your sample - you pay first w/ Amsoil and then they send the kit.

EDIT:
Being skeptical by nature - I'm thinking Amsoil might format their report simply to sell their oil - the analysis being a marketing tool.

Thats a great idea... if we can get some trending data that shows when crank failure is imminent, that would be very useful.

And "Dirt" is right in the middle of this mess, and turned 100k with no problems. As well as no doubt a non trivial number of the other 1000+ people we haven't heard from that no doubt racked significant miles without crank problems.

The first month I had my Uly I rode it pretty hard, because I was riding it like a 9 motor. Now I'm appreciating the big fat low powerband for what it is, and more often then not short shifting it, going nowhere near redline. Based on experience from racers, I suspect that will really help.

I'm treating my rev limiter like a nice cigar. I love having it around, and really enjoy it when I use it, but once a month is enough thanks. Who knows if it will make a difference...

Worth an oil analysis though... it would be nice data to add to our chart above. Hours above 5000 RPM would be even better, but no way we can easily get that.

I think I've hit my rev limiter maybe 5 times tops ( if that many ) in almost 35,000 miles. I usually shift around 3500 rpms. Why beat the thing is my thinking. I've only adjusted the primary once and only because of the miles and not necessarily because it needed it. I haven't reset the TPS since 10,000 miles because it runs just great. The front spark plug is the original and the rear I changed once and quit blipping the throttle after that. I almost always ride far enough so the fan comes on at shutdown and that usually means the oil in the swingarm is at least 150 F. The engine in these Buell is like the engine in a John Deere tractor and nothing runs like a Deere. If you treat the bike right then it will probably last a long time. Beat it and it will probably grenade on you. And if you ride it like a maniac you probably have the tickets to prove it and high insurance premiums along with those tickets.

Because it's so darn much fun!

Honestly, I beat the snot out of my Uly. I change the engine and primary oil once/year, along with adjusting the primary, clutch and clutch cable. I have a 5.6 mile ride to work, and I ride that every day. She runs strong and good as new at 25,500 miles : )
