Seems like the info is spread all around here so I thought I'd start a thread to consolidate.

Here's what I have so far:

SkiFastBadly: Built July 06. VIN is 4mzdx03d873700235. Engine failed at 28K miles.

Hughlysses: Built Sept 06 VIN 4MZDX03D173700481, mfd Sept 06 29K miles

Desertdweller: Build date Sept 06 VIN Vin # 4MZDX03D373700532, Mileage 19K

Union_man: 40K miles VIN and build date TBD

Rdkingryder: 30K miles VIN and build date June 07
Towpro Jul 2006 mileage and VIN TBD
Dirtbike Sept 2006 mileage and VIN TBD

Let's try and limit the thread to VIN, build date, and mileage, there are lots of other threads for the tech questions.

Something that needs doing for sure and thanks for stepping up.

My 2007 bike hasn't failed- I just mentioned my reason for being concerned.

Is this confined to the Ulysses only, all of the 07 XBs or is it across the board to all 07 XB and 07 Sportsters?
P.S.
I forgot to say it, sorry to hear of the broken cranks to all the 07 owners.

Steve, as all the XBs use the same motor, I think we should include those. I'll note the non Ulys, and come up with a better format if we start getting a lot of those. Same with sportsters. It's not my thread, I just started it, anybody's welcome to throw in whatever the feel is relevant. I'll keep the original post updated.

Thanks

I'm guessing the Ulys get more miles put on sooner from being used as a sport tourer and commuter than the other XBs so are more likely to exhibit the failure within 3-4 years from new.

For sure all XBs should be included.

Craig, my build date is Jun '07, probably the latest with the problem. Hmm, I shouldn't be so happy about that.

Nallin Racing just educated me over on the XLforum and the XL cranks are different so that wouldn't apply.
I was hoping they would be the same; not to wish misfortune on Sportser owners, it would be the only way you could get H-D to even think about addressing the problem.
Sorry to hijack your thread.
A spreadsheet is in order for this one.

skidfastbadly, I don't know who owns mine now but it had around 6K miles when I sold it 1 year ago. (crank was still good). It went to some HD dealer in SE PA (the dealer I traded it to sold it wholesale to another dealer)

I just hang around because you folks are the most civil group I have ever found on the internet : )

H/D address the problem? Really?
So far failed bikes are all out of warranty.
The brand is discontinued.

The question is: does H/D have any motive to help, beyond selling parts, to repair the engine?

Look at the wheel bearing fiascoes. The answer: buy a 2010 wheel.

You may want to post an inquiry on the XB board as well if you have not already done so.

Correction on my VIN and Build date... I do not have any discernable crank problem at 18k miles.

So the new total is:

I'm wondering if there's a way to find out the engine build date. I would think this is more important than the frame/assembly date. If an older engine is put into a later frame, like mine. I can see a particular engine build date being a problem of a bad crank batch. Or maybe the guy making that crank then was new or something. New guy, "Oh, you mean crank pins are supposed to be hardened? Uh, no I haven't made any yet."

My bike- 2007 Uly, build date June 2006, 6281 miles, VIN 4MZDX03D673700041. No crank issues that I know of but then that low miles is way out of the population of "knockers".

I doubt there is much difference between engine build date and bike build date. They ran these pretty close together as the cot of storing a $2000 engine would really mess up your profits.

Sorry those of you with an '07 that are having this issue (or unsure of whether you will). This is exactly why I paid 1600 for my extended warranty. Some will say "Too damn much" but I guess when it's 4500 for a new motor, I say it's a good bet, even though I have an '09.

Thanks for the reformat, I've tried to correct the original post but am informed that posts older than 2160 minutes cannot be edited. Bit of a pain...I'll see if I can find a work around.

I would reserve your list for failures only. There is also value in keeping up with the "non" failures, but keep it on a separate list. My .02. Just the few failures you have indicates there was obviously a problem.

Ski, just cut and paste it to a new post with your browser, and change what needs to be changed.

My plan was to keep the whole list together, but make it so we can sort on failed versus fine. Just putting up the bad crank cases leads people to amplify the scope of the problem. You look at it and say "holy smokes! 8 crank failures in one year". Where if you saw 3000 entries, and 8 crank failures, it give a whole different perception.

We are just gathering data now. When the list gets too big, we can move it to something easier to manage.

OK, that displays nice, but is hard to manage. From here on I'll do it this way:

First the table version:
Handle Build Date VIN mileage failure
Jomartijr Jun 06 4MZDX03D673700041 6281 miles no crank problems
SkiFastBadly Jul 06 4MZDX03D873700235 28k miles crank failure
Towpro Jul 06 ??? ??? no crank problems
Hughlysses Sept 06 4MZDX03D17370048129K miles crank failure
Dirtbike Sept 06 ??? ??? crank failure
Desertdweller Sept 06 4MZDX03D373700532 19K crank failure
EGssons07uly May 07 ??? 15k miles no crank problems
Rdkingryder Jun 07 ??? 30K miles crank failure
Reepicheep Jun 07 4MZDX03D973701332 18k miles no crank problems
Marks3tbillet Jun 07 4MZDX03D973701359 18K miles no crank problems
Union_man ??? ??? 40K miles crank failure

Then the edit version:
Handle, Build Date, VIN, mileage, failure
Jomartijr, Jun 06, 4MZDX03D673700041, 6281 miles, no crank problems
SkiFastBadly, Jul 06, 4MZDX03D873700235, 28k miles, crank failure

Hughlysses, Sept 06, 4MZDX03D173700481,29K miles, crank failure
Dirtbike, Sept 06, ???, ???, crank failure
Desertdweller, Sept 06, 4MZDX03D373700532, 19K, crank failure

Thank God mine is build in October.
No cases so far.
After the accident with the King, the Uly babe is my bike to rely on. European Bike Week is coming soon. Except for a rusted muffler and a loosening seat cover, the bike was without any trouble. Not to mention the stunts the mechanics at the dealership pulled.
As my friend used to say: bring your vehicle to a workshop and you might as well junk it
