Is anyone familiar with how to install a new voltage regulator? The new version has different connecting terminals than the old one. I'm a little perplexed.?. I don't want to snip any wires without being certain.

They changed the voltage regulator connector due to the old one being prone to failure. You should be able to remove the existing old connector and install the extra new connector the VR came with.

Here are the old XB style 77 connector (right), 2003/2004

2003-2004 VR 77 connector

It was around 2005 when the new VR 77 connectors came out, but you could also modify your previous VR units with this kit (Deutsch connector, 2 pin (14-16 gauge pin):

Y1312.02A8 for about $20, Buell, Voltage regulator service kit to fix the connector 77 (voltage regulator) on all XB 2003-2007

VR 77 modification connector, Y1312.02A8

From 2008-2010 both VR connectors changed.
