I have a 2005 XB12R with 13K miles. I know it still has the old style oil pump drive gear that was prone to abnormal wear. Today i dropped the oil pump to inspect the gear for the first time and i found it to be worn unevenly. I expected to find some wear but what i found was very slight wear on one side of the gear and on the other side the teeth are worn halfway through! I was wondering if anybody knew what might cause this inconsistent wear pattern? On both of my old tubers with miles in the low-mid 20's the gears are just starting to wear but is consistent the whole way through the gear. | ||

Whitebuell has a nice write up in the archives and I think he had it pretty well chased down. At the end of the day, it's an alignment problem. Some have it bad, some don't. Kind of a hassle to fix, but nothing you can't knock out in a relaxed weekend. After 05 they went to a new material on that gear, and that seemed to help. So your replacement part (if you get the "race" part) should fix it forever. | ||

Thank you for your reply. I found Whitebuell's very informative posts and it looks like i have an alignment issue or a pinion shaft that is out of round. My oil pump driven gear also has marks on the teeth. I thought i would be replacing the gear in my older tubers before my XB. | ||

I think the consensus opinion is that the new gear will solve the problem even if you do have an alignment issue, but I haven't seen conclusive evidence one way or another. |
