First of all, I'm back after a kind of long hiatus - I'll report on that elsewhere.

I took my Firebolt off the road a couple years ago, and just tagged it again a couple months ago. I'm now remembering what a sweet little bike it is.

But...it has a hard, jackhammer-type pounding when the front brake is applied with any force at all - it used to just chatter a bit. I know I overheated it pretty badly once and that could have something to do with it. I tried removing it and hit both sides with an orbital sander, and cleaned and lightly lubed the mounting hardware (with disc brake pin lube), all to no avail.

So, I'm pretty sure I need a new front rotor. I saw the Erik Buell Racing rotor mentioned elsewhere, and I think that's how I'm going to go.

The 6mm is about $35 cheaper than the 5mm ($125 vs. $160). In reality, I'm pretty easy on my brakes, esp. the front brake, trying to use engine braking whenever possible in the twisties. Is there any significant drawback to going with the thicker rotor and saving money? It seems logical it would resist warping more, and would wear longer before needing replacement, but I'd like to consider any possible downsides before committing.

I do plan on spending the extra $41 for their attachment hardware. Comments?

Thanks in advance - good to be back!

BTW, a few days ago at the high point on the Cherohala:

Edited to add: I found the discussion on the Ulysses with the same problem in which there was discussion on this topic. Last post was in late 2010. If there's no new data I'll probably go with the 6mm.}
