I am new to Buell Motorcycles. This will be my first time changing the oil in the transmission of my 08 ULY. I'm about to leave for a 500 Mile Rd Trip. I meant to change my Trans oil this week, but a couple things have kept me from it, mostly questions that I've not found answers too.

Do the primary and transmission really use he same reservoir & drain plug?

Does one have to fill the trans by taking the clutch cover off?

Do you always have to change the clutch cover gasket? I purchased a primary inspection cover gasket only when I bought my oil, didn't realize I needed both.

Thanks,

MOP

Just to make sure we are talking about the right things, there are two black doors on your primary cover. One is the the little one with two screws, that is the primary chain inspection window, and then you have a larger keyhole shaped door with 3 screws, that is the clutch door. You don't really need to, but I recommend removing both. I use a funnel and fill it back up via the primary chain door, then watch the level from the clutch door. Fill it up with the bike upright, as if you are on the sidestand it will pour out. They take exactly 1 quart to fill from my experience.

I never have, and I've never had a problem. Easy enough to replace without losing any fluid in the event you get a leaker.

And in my experience, if that gasket does leak, it doesn't really gush, it just slowly weeps and discolors the primary, so it won't strand you or be dangerous. So you have plenty of time to get a new one.
