I have the primary cover off, and I have not gone any farther. I can grab the whole clutch assembly and rock it in any direction. The gear that the starter engages has touched the INSIDE of the case half. What is failing? Or is this normal?

Sounds like the bearing in the clutch shell is going south.
Pretty sure the XB uses a needle bearing where the tubers use a roller ball.
