Rotella is a really high quality oil, and though I would not recommend it if it did not fall within the manufacturer's specs, it might work just fine in an air cooled twin. I know for a fact that there are thousands of air cooled industrial engines out there running fine and dependably using Rotella, so it obviously has the ability to run in high temperature environments. Rotella has gained a good rep outside the industrial/ agricultural markets as an excellent oil at a good price, especially if you want to buy it in bulk. One of the qualities that it has that makes it a product worth knowing about is that it still has a fairly high zinc content, and that zinc is important in metal to metal contact areas such as flat tappet camshafts, found in earlier passenger engines. With an air cooled Sporty/Buell engine, that zinc content is really not as critical, as they use roller style tappets, and engines that use exhaust sensors can run into problems as the zinc emmissions can foul the sensors, one of the reasons that oils formulated for modern engines have very low levels of zinc in their formulas. Another requirement for Sporty/Buell engine oil is it's ability to deal with the extremely high load pressures that occur with the roller style rod and main bearings these engines use. If Rotella does indeed meet the specs required for high speed/high contact/high temperature roller bearing use, then it might work just fine. It IS a great, versatile lubricant, but there are products engineered for the exact requirements of air cooled motorcycle engines, and I would tend to stick with those, especially if there are exhaust sensors and the like involved. | ||
