New user and Buell owner so sorry for my ignorance ... have had an 09 Uly XB12XT for about a month now with 20K and my check engine light just came on yesterday. I thought there was a time the fan did not come on as expected so I went ahead and replaced the fuse just in case. Fan does come on after a ride, but after another 10+ starts the engine light is still coming on. Do I have to take it in or is there more I can do to diagnose & fix this myself. Thanks for any help or suggestions. P.S. - The 20K service was supposedly completed prior to my purchase if that is important.

Thank you for the reference. That will be very useful. My manual apparently does not explicitly indicate where the diagnostic port is … says that I need a separate Electronics Diagnostics manual for any electrical question. From other posts I thought it was under the seat on the left, but I found no empty 4 pin connectors. If anyone can please tell me where I can find the port on an 09 Uly XT I would really appreciate it. If there is a version of the electronics manual that I can purchase and download that would be great information as well. If it is only available in paper I’ll go ahead and order one. I have also noted an odd new noise that seems to be coming from the air box. I found references to this in other posts indicating an exhaust actuator failure. If that is my problem and I will soon be going to a Hawk exhaust is this something that I have to fix? Thanks for comments on any of my questions.

It is under the seat on the left side near where the frame meets the tail section. It might be hidden behind the black heat deflector.

There is no electronic version available. There are pirated scanned copies of some of the older bikes, but I've never seen one for your bike. Your best bet is to order up the manual and the parts book too if you don't have that yet either.

Take the cover off and see if you can determine where its coming from, it could be the actuator, but it could also be an air leak from a bad seal somewhere on the airbox.

If that exhaust uses the valve you will want to get the actuator issue fixed. If not, then don't worry about it. Also, before you start going nuts changing exhausts, you should get a Race ECM from Erik Buell Racing, it will make a huge improvement in the bikes day to day driveabilty and smooth out the fueling. It is well worth getting before you get an exhaust that may alter how your bike runs.

Thank Froggy ... I appreciate all of the input & suggestions. The muffler upgrade is for sound 1st & performance 2nd, but I'll definitely put the Race ECM on my short list. Do I need a tool such as EcmSpy to utilize a new ECM? My last bike was a 93 Nighthawk so everything I do with this bike is a new learning experience.

No ECMspy needed on the 2008+ bikes. Plug it in, do a TPS reset (instructions included), let it idle for a few minutes then enjoy your transformed bike : )
