Hey guys,

Posting a couple bikes of my right front fork to get an opinion on whether the seals are blown or not. I think I already know the answer, but would appreciate any advice you have.

This is my 2003 XB9r, not sure of the mileage, as the speedo sensor was blown when I got it. Estimated? About 3,000 miles.

Is this just gunk, or am I in trouble? (To note, the other fork is completely clean).

Looks like it to me... I just had to change my seal too. I was riding on a lonely road when i noticed the fork oil dripping while i was cruising. By the time I got home, that's what my fork looked like.

The good news is, it's not that hard to do yourself and the parts are cheap. A set of seals from your local HD dealer will set you back $20, heck, you'll spend $10 on the oil anyway.

Follow the instructions, you may need a couple of special tools so check with your friends to see if they have them already. If not, you can make what you need with a trip to the hardware store and some ingenuity.

Yup, they are toast.
A couple of things.
First make sure you replace the seal AND the wipers. Also the internal bushings should be replaced.
I'm seeing something on the top pic that concerns me a bit. It looks like there is scratches on the fork leg. This is usually caused by dirt/sand that is mixed in with all the leaked out fork oil.
If there are scratches, they new seals will leak prematurely.
If you replace the fork tube, the replacement comes with new seals and bushings. At least it did for my Uly..
Wipe all the mung off the fork leg(s) and look closely for scratched running the length of travel.

In either case changing the seals or the whole tube takes about the same effort.

My '04 is leaking too. Did you bottom the forks out, or do you think the seals just wore out?

Why does the right seal go so much more frequently than the left? Brake dust? Heat from the rotor? What?

Uneven springs forces. Did you maintain your fork? Do you maintain it exactly following the service manual or you differ? If you maintain the fork exactly like service manual says with replacing all seals, with checking springs and bushings, do this each 10000 miles there should not be issues.

Does the right fork handle compression damping, while the left handles rebound? I'd think that compression damping endures a lot more pressure than rebound.
