I am trying to remove my triple tree clamps on my '03 XB9s. The top clamp came off easy enough, but the lower would not slide out at all. The lower bearing may be shot, too. Here is a picture of it where I had to stop  Anyone know what the two bolts on the neck are? And another torx pan head is below it that doesn't seem to serve a purpose. Does either of these have something to do with removing the lower clamp? I can't see that they would. I did try using a stick of wood and a hammer to tap from the top but the lower still would not budge. I'm trying to avoid using a bigger hammer, so if you have any clues for me I would appreciate it. | ||

The lower bearing has corroded/seized on the shaft. Try soaking it good with PB Blaster or another very good penetrate. Then put the cap nut on and tap it out with the wood block/mallet. the bearing might come out with it, its bad anyways, just one step less to do. Good luck! | ||

I had the same thing happen after trying to replace a damaged front end on my XB. I eventually got it out using the wood block and hammer method that Coolice mentioned. It took a ton of effort but it eventually came out. I recommend a bigger hammer. | ||

I finally got the lower clamp out! I beat on that thing until I chewed up the end of a good 2x4. Finally had to tap directly on the stem. It was corroded and rusted. The bearings came out shortly after that. How necessary is the HD steering head bearing installation tool for getting the new bearings seated properly? It kind of looks like something that could be cobbled together from the hardware store. |
