I'm pretty sure my 99 X-1 Lightning engine has a bad primary seal, as on any ride over 15 minutes or so, the primary case breather tube blows a decent amount oil and the primary case oil level is low. I'm planning on switching out the primary seal this weekend, as well as replace the primary chain tensioner with the upgraded version, as recommended both by the dealer and the multiple posts on the subject here on the forum.

One question I have is, the parts guy at the local dealer (who did not seem too knowledgeable on the subject)recommended that I also replace the crankshaft bearing assembly. From what I can tell in my manual and from the various postings and pics on the forum, the crankshaft bearing is inside the clutch pack, which wont need to be disassembled, right? Does anyone know or suggest any different?

I want to replace whatever parts necessary while I've got the primary case opened up, so let me know if anyone recommends any other parts/seals/bearings/etc that should be replaced?

Also, does anyone have the Kent Moore Seal Installer tool they want to sell? If yes, message me or respond to the posting.

Thanks to everyone for their comments in advance.

I never heard of a "crankshaft bearing assembly" failing. Buellistic has some strong opinions on removing a plate from the clutch pack (spring plate or something, he calls it the Grenade Plate). I never pulled it and never had problems in 30k miles on my tuber.

Get the metal primary gasket, it's reusable, a lot easier to install, and a lot less likely to fail.
