Hey Guys, I recently bought a Buell Lightning chopper, the donor was a 1999 X-1. I've been wanting a bike like this forever, the right deal came along and I capitalized! Anyways, I'm a fairly experienced weekend mechanic, and have been trying to learn as much as quickly as possible about the Buell motor to try and be proactive in any possible deferred maintenance this bike might have been subject to. The forum posts on the primary chain drive tension has been confusing. I saw at the top of the "Drivetrain" section of the forum that is says "1/2" to 5/8" at the tightest spot in the chain and I understand the concept of having a chain too tight that doesn't expand at the same rate as the motor heats up. I am looking for conformation or comment on if the 1/2" to 5/8" applies to most Buell motors - specifically mine; and is that total play - max up to max down? I mispoke in the quote, it says "5/8" and closer to 3/4" I better pay attention! | ||

That's a cool looking bike you've got there. Just a shame a Tuber Buell had to be sacrificed for it. 3/4" seems to be the correct figure on a cold motor. | ||

One thing you want to check is the primary tensioner. If it's the old style, it's going to break if it hasn't already. Open the primary and check it. Replace it if it's the old thin style. A cracked old style version WILL mess up your day. |
