I have a 99 ST3 with FI. The bike seemed to be running rich i.e. emitting black smoke and bogging slightly when throttled. The smoke gradually became a little thicker and the bike became gradually harder to start until it won't start at all.
It's been sitting for too long now because of this problem and I want to RIDE it. I love this bike. Someone help me please. Thanks, Jack

Has it thrown any codes?

Could be a O2 sensor or cyl. head temp sensor.

O2 sensor is a Bosch 12014,local auto parts store it fits early '90's chevy pick-up, about $20.

Jramsey, someone mentioned on here that my problem could be intake seals. Unless I have 2 problems wouldn't bad intake seals cause the bike to run lean before the bike quit running instead of rich? Got an opinion? Thanks for your previous reply and the tip on the 02 sensor.

If the bike had a carb, it would likely run leaner with bad intake seals. However, if I understand this EFI system, the ECM would read the O2 sensors as being leaner than normal and start adjusting the mixture richer.

It's apparently overcompensating though, so the ECM is likely reacting to a defective O2, IAT or CHT sensor, or perhaps a broken wire in the wire harness somewhere that's affecting driveability.

I would start by checking the plugs to see which cylinder is running rich. Since the O2 sensor only reads the rear cylinder it might be over compensating by making the mixture too rich for both front and back.

Thanks guys for the input and the tips. I feel I have enough info now to at least make some educated guesses on my problem.
