My 2004 xb12s with about 25k mi has developed an annoying habit of popping out of 1st gear and into neutral. The neutral light sometimes, but not always, comes on, and I can shift normally back into 1st or into 2nd from there. (But it'll pop out of 1st again before too long.) Seems to happen at about 1/4 throttle most of the time, but that could be coincidence. Never happens in any other gear, and hot/cold motor doesn't seem to affect it. Seems to happen more on some days than others... My wrenching skills are fairly basic, never been in a transmission. Is this a known problem with a simple thing or two I can check? Thanks for any help. |

Could be a bent pin on the shift drum, or out of adjustment mechanism that moves that drum. That would be good, as you can get to it without splitting cases. Bad news would be worn dogs (another possibility). That means splitting cases. |

Thanks. At least now I have some names of parts to look up and learn about. Sounds like something I may need to hand over to a shop though. |

It's not terrible, but it takes a locking tool, some special (big) sockets, and a monster torque wrench. So doable, but not trivial. Not a bad idea to take it to a pro if you have one you can trust. |
