Shortly after starting, My 2001 M2's oil tank exploded, splitting almost in half. I replaced the tank and when I started it, I noticed the crankcase vent hose was pumping out air instead of drawing a vacuum. Eventually this reversed and the vent hose started pulling a vacuum. So it was the crankcase vent hose that pressurized the tank causing it to explode. I am at a total loss as to what this could be, but it doesn't sound good. I suppose I can disconnect the crankcase vent hose and just install a short vent hose on the oil tank so dirt doesn't get in there, but I'm concerned that I've got an engine problem. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rick |

Given your bikes age, a manufacturing defect can probably be discounted, though not ignored. The difference in compressability between gases and fluids being what it is, I can't imagine the crankcase building up enough pressure to split the tank. A known situation with tubers is their ability to blow the oil tank cap out of the tank if the oil level is too high. Several members here have mopped oil off of the ceiling of their garage when that happened when the seat was off. I suggest that the oil level was too high, and (perhaps the seat was/is close to the top of the cap) the cap didn't blow, so the tank split. Hope this helps, and let us know, please, what you find. Many thanks, Dave. I've installed a catch bottle and hose to the vent and significantly lowered the oil level (just touches the bottom of the DS when cold). Then I zip-tied a piece of screen over the end of the crankcase hose. It's first test ride is tomorrow. |

You can't measure the oil in the tank cold if I remember right. It needs to be hot and within a minute or two of engine shut down or you will read way too low. |

That's true. Just checked the manual. Engine should be at normal operating temp, bike level and cap fully seated in the tank. Lesson learned. When I topped off the tank last week, I did it cold. Test ride tomorrow. |

Well, it's terminal. I started to ride to work this morning and there's lots of metal racket from #1 and lost power. Thanks to everyone for their input, but I'm parking it and am going to find something else to ride. If anyone wants any parts off it, let me know. |

I'll take some pics later and get them posted. This is a two-owner and my (almost) daily rider for the past five years. It's stock and the only upgrade is a billet motor mount that is a year or so old. |

Picked up a nice little commuter bike this weekend to get me around while I ponder the Buell's future. Checked the compression: #2 is fine and #1 pumps up fairly well, but leaks down quickly. Removed the rocker cover and there's no obvious top end damage, so I'm thinking the rings failed. Going to tear it down and see what the inards look like. Any other thoughts? |

Sorry for the delay, but I hope to finish tearing down the bike this weekend and begin parting it out. Let me know if you are interested in any of it by sending me a PM. Speaking of which, I can't figure out how to PM members on this forum, if someone could educate me on that. It's pretty straight forward on other forums, but I don't get this one. Thanks! Rick |
