I just bought a 2000 X1 and front cylinder only fires occasionally. TPS was recently reset by dealer I was told. New plugs and wires. Fresh gas. Plug sparks good when out of cylinder. Do not want to spend big bucks on new coil as a guess. Any ideas?

I forgot to say I have a Buell Race Computer.

I think the problem is in your coil. I never heard of a Buell or Harley one lunging it otherwise. Pull your front plug wire and check for continuity with a multimeter. If continuity is good then the most likely culprit is your coil. Normally they usually work or don't work, no intermittant firing. KK

The plug sparks when out of the cylinder. Could it just be weak spark? Any chance the intake manifold gasket is bad, I read they are troublesome. I need to check the coil resistance, just got those specs and will do that tomorrow.

Disconnect/reconnect your plug wires from the coil several times to "exercise" the connection.

There may be some corrosion in there and this will be a temp fix to see if it helps.

Had the same fault with my X1's front cylinder a couple of months ago...it was the intake seals.

i had a similar problem 5 years ago on my 2000 X1. i did all the common things as others have already suggested. i tested and swapped plug wires & coil from my good running S3, changed intake seals but it still did not solve the problem. on my bike the sparkplug would foul in the front cylinder only. eventually it would start skipping & missing when it got bad enough and would only run on the rear cylinder. i pulled the tank and found that the throttle cables had contacted the front fuel injector wire and rubbed through the insulation right down to the bare wires. it must grounded out the injector and made it run full rich. the solution was to repair the wiring & replace the front injector which must have shorted out. i have owned the bike since new so the only thing i can assume is that the cable or wire was routed poorly when it was assembled. these bikes shake alot and they have alot of contact/rub points so it may be wise for you to check the wiring.
