2008 Buell 1125R with 23,000 miles

I was riding in Malibu CA this last weekend. I took off from a stop, went through 1st, 2nd and into 3rd gear, at about half throttle. The drive belt snapped and flew off of my bike! After looking at the belt, it appeared cracked and weathered as if it sat outside in the desert heat. My bike has always been garaged and never sits outside unless I'm riding it. I couldn't tell that it was cracked while on the bike, only after it snapped and I bent it in half. The dealer informed me that my bike was out of warranty since April 2010, so I had to buy a new one. Now, I was told that Buell had some issues with the old belt and made a new, improved version. After searching a few dealers I located one and purchased it for $162!!! Damn, that seems pricey!!!

Has anybody else had a belt snap???

If there were problems with the old belt, shouldn't this have been a mandatory recall???

Do you think Buell should re-imburse me for this belt???

I heard that the belt is guaranteed for life not to break, and as a precaution it should be changed at 80K miles. Is this correct???

Wow. That's a good price on a belt. My '09 XB9SX broke one for no apparent reason[ I didn't go back down the hill to look for it] at @ 10,000 miles. maybe I sucked up a rock. I expect my new one to last much longer.

Belts break. Chains wear out. They get replaced when it happens. Replacing a high quality chain and sprocket is just as pricey as a belt.

The newer belts don't have a pre-defined service life (i.e., replace at 15k miles) like the earlier belts did, which some folks have interpreted as meaning that they should last the life of the bike (wrong) or that they are warrantied for life. It is not warrantied for life, and you won't get reimbursed.

But if it is any consolation, if our sales rates are any indication, 1125s break belts much less frequently than XB or tube frame Buells.
