It's 35 here in Memphis and I went to leave work. Started the bike and it had run for a minute or so and then there was a loud noise like an engine backfire and the oil tank is split down the backside and oil sprayed several feet away. It made the same noise the other day, but nothing catastrophic like this happened. What in the world do you think caused it?

Okay, some more info, after I've read some related posts. I did add oil this weekend and perhaps I over-filled it. But it was even colder this morning and road to work fine. And that wouldn't explain the similar backfire noise I had last week, before adding oil. But maybe the two are unrelated. Any advice will be appreciated.

Lot of folks ride their bikes in super cold temps so you must have had something else going on like a blocked oil like or something like that...
Keep us posted.

have you done anything with the crankcase breathers? Normally overfilling will blow out the filler lid, not blow open the oil bag.

Maybe a ring problem? Hole in a piston?

Thanks, guys. Breathers are stock. I think the seat prevented the filler cap from blowing out. Replacement oil tank from eBay arrives tomorrow. I'll put it all back together with the cap off and see what happens. Then I'll post an update. Thanks!

I zip tied a balloon to the radiator overflow on a KLR-250 when I was debugging what turned out to be a leaking head gasket.

Very entertaining. Idle... Idle... Idle... BANG!

Okay, the new (used)replacement oil tank just arrived and I've been pondering what happened. The only thing I can come up with is that the vent hose had moisture in it and froze, causing the pressure to build and rupture the tank. I'm considering replacing the hose with a much shorter one that simply runs down the side of the frame. I hope to have it all back together and fire it up tomorrow.

Got the new tank installed and the crankcase breather hose is pumping air instead of drawing a vacuum. That would explain the exploding oil tank. Any ideas?
