I have an '03 XB9R and recently (within the last couple hundred miles) it has started making a strange noise that sounds like it's coming from the primary. I wish I could describe the noise it's making. It's kind of like a chugging noise like something is rubbing. The noise is constant and keeps pace with the engine speed. And clutch or gear input has no effect on the noise. I just recently changed the primary oil and didn't notice any excess metal shavings on the drain plug. Engine performance doesn't seem to be affected by whatever is going on. Anybody have any ideas?

Primary chain?

Off hand it sounds like your primary chain may be to loose. Last I checked aluminum will not be affected by a magnet. I have a M2 that I bought used and pulled the primary cover and the upper part of the cover was really chewed up from the chain that was to loose. And yes it did the weird noise and did did a chugging type of thing at certain rpm's. Well I hope you find the problem and let us know what you find. Good luck.

Probably should have mentioned that when I changed the oil in the primary, I also adjusted the chain to specs. Another chain-related thought occurs to me. What is the likelihood of the primary chain wearing through the plastic skid on the tensioner shoe and causing this noise by contacting the metal underneath? Since the noise is constant and equal to engine speed, whatever's happening is happening the whole time the bike's running, regardless of RPMs.

"...I also adjusted the chain to specs."

There has been quite a bit of discussion around the accuracy of the specs in the FSM. Do a search and you'll find a wealth of info on this...
