hello all,

I am at my wits end with troubleshooting a starting problem. When I hit the starter button I hear nothing but Clicking. So far I have replaced the Battery (which was needed), Checked the relays and jumped the starter with no effect. I have also, bump started the bike to test the charging system and it is operating as it should. I pulled the plugs out of the heads and had the same clicking noise but for grins I held the clutch lever in and it would turn over but very weak and slow. I am thinking that it is now the starter itself but wanted to get some advice before I spent the 100 bucks on a new one and invested the time to take the primary apart.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

When you jumped the starter did you bypass the solenoid ? if not try pulling the cover off the solenoid, check the condition of the copper ring on the solenoid plunger and the contacts it mates with, They can get pitted, clean them up with a file or sandpaper.

Check your ground strap from the frame to the swing arm block.

I'd start with what Snowbees said. The remark about clutch is a bit confusing. So you're saying when you pull in the clutch lever the starter/solenoid does engage?

+1 ground strap or corroded terminals on starter.

Ground cables are good. I have taken the cover off the solenoid and cleaned the contacts.

Yes, Kalali when I grab the clutch lever it does engage but still very weak.

Do a voltage drop test from the battery neg terminal. Anything close to a 1 volt drop shows a bad ground somewhere.

I'm still trying to figure out the connection between the clutch lever and the starter...The only possible connection is the safety switch. Not sure if S1 has one and besides that should only matter if the bike is in gear.

Shadow, if you checked the ground strap, checked all the cables not broken inside insulation( you would do a continuity test with an ohmmeter, low resistance is good cable, infinity is broken cable) just a heads up if i remember you can't just jump the solinoid on that starter with just a wire between the two power posts like on a car,you have to jump to the solenoid trigger wire i think. Can't really remember i could just be wrong, just remember one end of the plunger in the solenoid plunger moves in to make contack the other end of it pushes a gear out to connect the motor to the reduction gear. But if you've made all the checks i've read so far it sounds like a bad solonoid or starter motor, I just replaced the one on my 98 S1W this spring. Good luck to you
