Just out riding my 2010 XB12Ss yesterday to the mountains North of me (good long ride) and when I got off the highway back near my home, the oil pressure light came on momentarily. No extra engine noises and oil level gets checked before and after every ride. Level is halfway up the hash marks. Rode on a bit and light went out, but came back on, again momentarily prior to reaching my house. Question: I know these harley motors operate at lower oil pressures especially at idle, but should a new bike with 1k miles be doing this? Called dealer and they said just bring it in for a look. Any other newer XB12's with similar oiling issues?

Definitely not right. I had the plug for that light come loose once on my M2, and that turned the light on, FWIW.

If you are stopping very hard it is possible to have the light flicker.

No hard stops, just a long hard run on the highway. Oil was probably at it's hottest (thinnest) condition. I need to check for lose connections. Hopefully it will be something simpler than having the dealer tear apart a new engine searching for something. Yikes!

Briefly cranked motor cold today and light went out immediately. Mustn't be a sheared shaft or anything mechanical. I'm wondering what the spread is between the pressure switch activating and the low side oil pressure of a very hot engine? If it's a 10psi switch for example and a hot motor at idle produces 10-15psi and my switch was made on a Friday, who knows?

If you are on a tuber, and haven't checked your oil pump drive gear, stop what you are doing and check it. Drop the oil pump, peer up into the cavity, and bump the crank to a few different positions.

If you are in the above category, *and* see a low oil pressure light, do the above a month ago. ; )

I have checked out the drive gear this last oil change.. I was riding a few days ago and the light came on solid, pulled in the clutch..shut it down and coasted to a parking lot.. waited 5 hours for a friend with a pickup.. got the oil pressure tested and everything checked out.. waiting on a new oil pressure switch now..just glad that I am getting pressure

@ Reepicheep. I have a 99 ST3 Tuber. When I drop my oil pump and peer up into the cavity what am I looking for? Thanks in advance. I've been lurking for a long time and saving posts from you and others to use when the time comes.

Hi Jack!

Look at the arrows:

See how it has that "step" in the tooth? That isn't supposed to be there, it's supposed to be a normal gear. The tooth has worn badly, and is getting thinner and thinner. At some point it will be too thin to handle the load on it, will shear off, and then bits and pieces of gears will be floating around in the cam cover (which will probably start a cascade of damage everything in there).

You will want to bump the crank to check that gear in a few positions, the wear is often much worse on one side than the other.

If it is really worn, the gear teeth can be worn to little triangles.
