anyone heard of it or tried it?

It apparently allows you to fool the ECM into running a richer mixture in closed-loop mode...something that you can't do on the DDFI3 ECM's.

I'm thinking about picking one up. I don't really have any problems with performance, but one cool days I can geel the bike running lean in closed loop...and on a 2009, there's really not much I can do about it through ECM programming.

Anyone heard of this or try it? At $85, looks like a worthy experiment...just don't want to blow up my bike.

Yes and no. You can either buy a junk unit like this that lies to your bike and makes things run worse after a while, or get the bike setup correctly. Piggyback units like this make the bike run rich, the O2 sensor sees this, leans out the mixture, the piggy back unit tries to enriches it again, and before you know it the bike runs terrible due to not being able to correctly adjust for environmental conditions. Or you can do things correctly and get your bike tuned or use a Race ECM.

Well, for one thing I don't race, and most race ECM's skew your bike to top end performance. Most of the adjustments are in the open loop mode that only affect WOT.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've been in open loop mode.

If there was a way to adjust closed loop function on 2009 ECM's or get a plug and play ECM that basically give you an optimal daily driver map without all the EPA bullsh!t, and can support a Spec OPS pipe and a modded airbox, I'd buy one today.

Also, this is not a piggyback. This adjusts the INCOMING signal to the ECM. It can't compensate because it always sees the adjusted O2 sensor data. The ECM thinks it's adjusting to 14.7:1, but because of the skewed incoming signal it's actually giving you like 14.0:1 or whatever you set it for.

anyway, if I'm overlooking something, point me in the right direction. That's why I'm asking instead of just buying and strapping it on.

Neither do I.

You might be thinking of carburetors still. Fuel injection allows you to have good fueling throughout the entire RPM range and in various environmental conditions.

Incorrect. : )

You can use ECMread and Tunerpro to do it, both free programs.

Ok, so its a overpriced version of a 5 cent resistor you can get from Radioshack. It changes the voltages so the bike thinks it is running lean and will dump in more fuel. If you want to do this, save yourself the trouble and change the voltages for the O2 sensor. This will accomplish the same thing, but for free. : )

No, I'm thinking of DDFI3 ECM's that are pegged at 14.7:1 AFR. You can adjust the fueling all you want, but eventually the ECM will learn to override your settings in closed-loop mode and get you back to 14: ]:1 anyway - at least that's how it was explained to me. Can you change the target AFR on 2009 ECM's?

I've been trying to find information about this, but for 2009+ models, there's really not much out there. Certainly not enough for me to feel comfortable hacking my own ECM. Also, from what I've read, you ARE limited to a 14: ]:1 AFR, even if you remap the fueling....it's not fueling that's the issue, is' that the ECM will mess with your map to get you back into 14.7:1 AFR unless you're at WOT.

yeah, I saw that - no love for the exhaust valve, which I'd like to keep for low and midrange performance. I've read that they're working on a Spec OPS calibration, but as of right now....there isn't one. They're also not programmable. You have to buy the $750 kit with the programmer...and I just don't have that kind of time. I'm not a pro racer and don't have days/weeks to spend tuning myself. I'd love to buy an Erik Buell Racing ECM, that's where I started looking first.

just because it's a cheap and simple solution, doesn't automatically mean it's bad - You get what you pay for....but what if you're not looking for much, should you still pay through the nose for it? I'm not considering this due to budget - it just appears to do exactly what I want...and nothing else, and is simple to install. "it's cheap and simple in its operation" isn't reason enough to dismiss it. There may be good reasons, but that's not one.

Heh.

+1 to froggys comments. He seems to be right often enough.

I don't know shit about FI tuning (or carbs for that matter), but I do know you can tune the 2009 models, as he stated. Do some reading, and spend your 85 dollars on a used ECM to tune with, thus saving your stock ECM for if you mess up. Or shoot Erik Buell Racing an email and see what they have to say about the product you are considering and how it will effect the motorcycle compared to their ECMs.

P.S. I like your profile quote, blarg.

after 2 days of searching through forums it DOES look like you can make the adjustments on the 2009 ECM, but the information is REALLY spotty, and there's not a lot of people doing it. I think I'm going to try running the stock ECM with my mods first and see how it goes before I start tinkering.

Apparently there is an adjustment for a rich and lean values from the O2 sensor, and target values for idle, low, mid, and high....whatever that means. At any rate if I'm willing to hack the ECM, this gadget isn't necessary, but a spare ECM WOULD be nice...although I read that you can just back up your original data and revert whenever you want.

I have contacted Erik Buell Racing, but no one has gotten back to me yet. If they would make a "race" ECM with a working exhaust valve, I'd pay $250 for that. (they DO know that 99% of the race ECM's they sell end up in street bikes, right?)

I'm not trying to start anything...there's just so much conflicting and incomplete information out there, it's hard to know what's accurate and what isn't. Froggy says you can tune 2009 ECM's and someone at a reputable Buell-friendly shop told me yesterday than it's pointless because it'll just learn to compensate for whatever changes you make.

Is he using different software that doesn't let you change as many things as TunerPro?

ugh! it's a little frustrating just getting enough information to figure out what I should be doing.
