Ok, try this one on for size. I have a 2003 XB9R. I recently replaced the speedo pick up after the last one cracked and shorted out. The new one has been in less than two months and already it seems to be malfunctioning. When the bike is cold the speedometer works fine, but as soon as it warms up the needle first begins to dip then drops to zero occasionally popping back up into the gauge. Then after extended riding I don't even get a wiggle out of it until the bike is left to cool down for several hours. I pulled the speedo pick up, cleaned it off, checked it over and reinstalled it. and then I pulled apart the three prong connector that lies in the jumble of wires underneath the drive pulley cover. I checked and cleaned all of the contacts and made sure that they were making contact and then reassembled. The symptoms still persist. |

On the tubers, and I believe also on your 03 9R, the power for that sensor went direct from the bike 12V power feed. That was right on the edge of what those sensors can handle, and bikes with transients blow sensors.
The fix is to put a 5v regulator inline with the sensor, or run power to the sensor from the 5V regulated voltage on the ECM. But I thought the updated kit did that for you... Maybe you got an old sensor? Or are missing an update kit? Or maybe it is a connector problem...
It's a magnetic pickup, so you can test it out of the bike by waving a screwdriver in front of it. When metal is in the field, you should see a step change in one of the other lines (5v to 0v or 0v to 5v, I can't remember which)... I think it is deep in the archives here somewhere... |

I am sorry you are bothered , but that was not my intention. Just wanted you to know my problem with the speedometer, but I see you are bothered, so I'll delete my previous post.......
