Oil lines ('03 XB9R) to/from the oil cooler were leaking and for removing them I had to drain the oil (filter was on the way). Due to leaking lines the engine couldn't be warmed up so some oil remains. I concluded that after installing new lines I must first add enough oil to start safely and warm up, then drain again and make a proper (full) fill. The question is: how much oil should I add for the warm up (that is how much oil remains when draining a cold engine)? Thanks for the knowledgeable. Owning a Buell is an adventure. OK, got the lines replaced and works fine. But... the oil level issue remains. I figured some oil might have left and filled 90% of the spec. Alarm light goes off after start as it should, all works fine, but the oil level is impossible to check. If the engine runs (sidestand), oil is splashed all over the dipstick. After killing the engine, just after maybe 10 sec the stick is bone dry. I assume when making a normal oil change & filling up to the spec there is nothing to worry but in this situation some doubt remains. This is an ancient old issue without any solution I guess? | ||

You should run it til its warm, kill it, let it sit for 5 mins then check oil level. The engine will be lubed well and the oil from the top side will have time to drain down. | ||

Warm or not it should show something on the dip stick. If drained properly it should take roughly 2.5 quarts to fill up. (Message edited by terrys1980 on July 13, 2010) |
