Hey everyone, I've been noticing something a little funny with my 2000 X1. When I first start it, it runs great. I twist the throttle and get a quick response. Engine seems to rev up and down very well.

However, once the engine is warm, it does something that seems a bit odd. It revs just fine when I twist the throttle. However, when I release the throttle, it doesn't rev back down as quickly. In other words, it will hover at the same RPM range for a half a second or so, then slowly return to idle.

I've recently replaced my exhaust since my stock mounting bracket failed and my stock exhaust broke lose from the header pipe. I now have a Vance and Hines SS2R, but it is stock other than that.

Any ideas what would cause this type of behavior? The bike is still very usable, but doesn't seem quite right...

I know this may vary from bike to bike but sometimes the switch to a more free flowing exhaust leans out the mixture just enough to cause the symptom you described, especially if you have "mildly" leaking intake seals. If it were my bike, I would either get a Race ECM or load Race fuel maps onto the stock ECM. You will need ECMSPY to do the upload.

I talked to a Buell tech at one of the local dealerships. He said that this is normal for the XBs, but usually not as noticeable on the older models. He said that it could be due to a Throttle Position Sensor, but would have to look at it.

However, in the interest of checking out Kalali's comment, how do I test for a leaky intake seal?

My X1's done it since i loaded the race map. Was good before,but the race map is sh*t loads better everywhere else so i'm livin with it.
Might get around to modifying the Race maps down low one day.........

You check for intake leaks by spraying WD40 or engine start(or similar) around the intake manifold when the engines idiling,listening for changes in idle if its leaking.

Chuck, the least messy way of checking for intake seal leak is using propane gas. Ge the bike nice and warm and blow propane gas using a nozzle right around the area where the intake manifold goes into the head. if the idle speed changes then you have a leaking seal. But before you do the "leak test", do a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) reset to make sure that is set properly. To do that, you either have to pay the dealer or get ECMSPY and the cable. If you don't know anything about ECMSPY, do a search here and you'll find loads of information.

While we are on the subject of cold start X1s, should the idle speed be higher when cold? Mine barely idles for the first minute and I see no evidence of as manual override

My X1 also has a lower idle at cold start up and I have to keep the throttle open manually for a bit before it idles on its own. There are however a number of folks who don't have a problem like that. You could raise the idle speed using the idle speed adjustment cable (left side right next to the intake behind the horn) but you will probably end up having a high idle speed when the bike is warmed up. The DDFI system on these bikes is not sophisticated enough to provide a high idle when cold and then gradually drop as the bike warms up.

One other question for all you X1 owners out there... are any of you worried about parts availability now that Buell is no longer making production bikes? Have you guys had any trouble getting parts?

my cold start idle was a lot better pre race map.
It starts and idles low, near stalling
with the race map.if i touch the gas it does stall...

me i'm on the other side of the world from
the cheap supply of Buell parts, and don't worry about parts.
I love this bike to much to let it get to me.
Even if hd came out tomorrow and said no more Buell parts,i'd still keep it and ride it daily as i do.

If i had the dosh i'd buy as many Buells as i could.

Parts availability should not be an issue for years to come. Most of the drivetrain parts are common with HD Sportsters. As for other parts, sadly these bikes are worth more in parts than whole so there is always parts sold either in classified or e-bay.

Callan, add a few points front and rear in the fuel map in the cells around idle speed. See if that helps. You can always revert back if it made it worse.

I too have found that my idle is now "sticking" higher as I come to a stop, with the clutch disengaged. I did have one tank full of 89 octane, instead of the 92 octane that I usually run. Could this have caused the change in idle speed? And one more question, while I haven't noticed it, will the idle stay up when I'm decelerating or gearing down? That wouldn't be good.

Hi there guys,

I have an 01X1. I know this thread has been dead a while but I have been having the same reluctance to return to idle once it has been revved when warm. It only happened after I loaded a race map. It also has the same cold start issues mentioned by others. I am going to try another map I found and see how that goes but I must agree with Nallac it runs way better in every other way so I will persevere.

Just putting this in here in case there are others having the same issue and wondering what's going on.

Does anyone have a solid race map for a 2000 X1 with k&n filter and slip on vance & hines exhaust? I got the ecm spy program already, Thanks guys for that!!
