Had a 1250 big bore kit, stage III heads and S.E. .536 cams in the 99 M2 and had them put on my 4500 mile 99 X1 and had everything on the X1 put back on the M2. Both bikes ran perfect before this swap. Since the swap, both bikes blow what the guy called the trans seal? (between the trans and motor?) and a hose from the cases that goes up one side of the bike, loops over the top under the seat and then routes down, blows oil all over the bike, my boot, and rear tire. Haven't been able to ride either bike in 3 years now and he stopped responding to my e-mails and returning my phone calls but got paid in full plus some. I put a lot of time and money into this and there was always extras involved including the total agreed price to have this work done. Not going to bring his name into this as I do not want to restart the drama, just looking for someone to help me figure out why the bikes are doing this. Anyone with any thoughts please contact me at: AKeil227@aol.com I'm in S.E. Mi and need to get the M2 back on the road as soon as I can. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Wood

Not a big deal to fix, a special tool helps. Common failure on tubers, with or without hopups.

"Common failure on tubers"

I am not sure if it is a common failure but putting too much oil in the crankcase for an extended time is usual the root cause.

The guy who did the swaps is or at least was all but famous at the time (have no idea now) Was know and respected for his knowledge on the boards and here in S.E. Michigan. Not saying it's not possible but I doubt he called me up to pick up my bikes with too much oil that many times. I can see a simple slip up once but when one bike comes right back covered in oil shortly after leaving and the other bike does the exact same thing? Then both bikes get the seals replaced again and they blow out again on the ride home. Remember, started with two running bikes with no leaks and PhatJ has seen them and rode them (no, he was not the mechanic) so he knows which X1 I'm talking about, we went to Dallas to pick up a bike and my tool boxes and ended up with a trailer full of Buells and some decent memories. Rode that X1 all that summer, put a Force pipe, Forcewinder and Race ECM on over the winter and rode it part of that spring till it went to get the 1250 kit, NRHS Stage III heads and .536 cams pulled from the M2 and put on my X1 and my 4500 mile X1 stuff put on the M2 both with Cometic gaskets and everything nice and fresh, ready to ride was the idea anyhow. I really need to get the M2 to run without blowing oil and have no problem paying to have it done, just want to know what I need to do. Any input is appreciated. I can see a coincidence of a seal blowing out after some mods, big coincidence of another blowing on another bike that the same guy worked on but for them to keep blowing make me think that there's something that wasn't done right to keep those seals blowing. I'm determined to get my Brother's bike on the road soon and am throwing out a lifeline here to the people that know. Again, your help is appreciated. And for what it's worth, I know my profile shows that I'm a newbe but look me up under Alpha. I've been on since 04 thanks to Phat J! For some reason, badweb doesn't recognize my old sign in or e-mail address. So I came up with a new on. Anyhow, thanks again all!

Is there any chance that the head breathers are somehow plugged or the hose is pinched? I am no expert (far from it) but it seems like something is causing the pressure to build up in the crankcase/head. This may be totally off base but I remember reading (I think Lafayette wrote this up) about putting a PCV type valve in the timing plug hole as a safety measure for this type of situation...

The old crank seals are known for not being very robust.
This is a common failure. The new style seal is a double lip the original is a single lip. check to be sure you don't have a pinched engine breather line as this will blow the crank seal.

When you pull the old single lip seal, you will be amazed how hard it is. The new one that came available back in 2002 or so is far superior.
It would be best if you replaced the crank spacer at the same time. About $15 or so total for both.

Probably not anything your motor builder did. Just age.

Go to google and search on "crank seal site: badweatherbikers.com"... It looks pretty common to me.

I just don't see how something like this could happen over and over and over on two separate bikes that were worked on one after the other and there not be some common issue that can be fixed. I know that all the extra seals and gaskets were from American Harley and that every seal blew out on the ride home. I know that the guy I had to the repairs won't make good on anything and stopped returning my calls and e-mails. I just want to try to figure out what is wrong with the bike, get it fixed right and be happy. Anyone ride/drive close to Ann Arbor that would be willing to take a look or a listen to give their $0.02 worth? I would appreciate it. Those of you that aren't close, please keep the ideas, input & thoughts coming. I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Wood

You're right that it's perplexing that it has happened to two bikes that had no problems, immediately after getting the bikes back. And if the breathers were blocked or pinched, they wouldn't be spewing as you say they are. Gross overfilling of oil by someone you refer to as highly respected, "famous" at the time mechanic? Doesn't sound right, but then again........

If the guy won't answer your calls and help, why protect him and his "reputation?" Maybe someone on here knows him and could speak with him to go over stuff.

3 years is a long time to be sans tuber.

My seal went out at 8500 miles in 2009.

Check the trans vent line for blockage and the head breathers.

Otherwise he could have scratched the aluminum inside where the seal sits and it is damaged causing this keep happening.

The inside aluminum is so very soft if done incorrectly it will get buggered up!

That sucks that a $7 dollar part can cause such a headache and a big freaking mess!

When you have it torn down look at the inner seal surface and see for yourself if it is buggered, Also check the seal for incorrect installation. If the seal is pressed in too far the bearing will cut through the seal as it will ride against it and tear it open in approximately 4-5k miles Or sooner depending on how far he pressed the seal in!

Thank you all for the input. I really appreciate it. One of the guys I race with is going to help me out when he gets back from Bowling Green since he runs a Buell engine in his Sporty and has some knowledge of what he's doing as well as tools and torque specs for everything. Anything else I should look at while we're in there? Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks again to everyone and keep it coming!

Make sure you have the new updated primary chain tensioner assembly (twice as thick backplate as the original) and you might want to replace the shifter shaft seals while you have it apart if they are getting old.
