The Check Engine Light stays on after the bike is successfully started and I would like to know if their is a way to access the Trouble Code without taking it to a dealer/DT system. Is their a tool that can be built to validate the trouble code? The bike runs fine otherwise - no power loss or stumbling. I'm sorry if this is an elementary question and thank you for any direction/guidance.

On older FI bikes there is a procedure to retrieve the codes from the ECM by connecting a couple of the ports on the ECM plug and counting the blinking form the CEL. There is also a dongle you can buy (from American Sport Bike) that does that. You might be able to find it if you do a search. I've always used ECMSPY for that purpose.

Thanks Kalali - I found the part you referred to from American Sport Bike. Where can I get more info on the ECMSPY and it's merits?
Many thanks again.

Some folks who bought the cable from e-bay got a copy of the program as part of the deal.
I downloaded the program directly from the ECMSPY site but they no longer host the software.
You can try downloading the program from this site:

Also make sure your ECM connection are clean and free of any corrosion... I'm on a crusade with this one. : )

Thanks Jespo - appreciate your feedback and detailed solution. The code from the Dongler connector indicated a Code 21 and that's as far as I got. (work really gets in the way of living!) I hope to dive into her this weekend as I've really been itching to ride the Uly. Last Saturday night I took my 97 Suzuki Bandit 1200 down around Philly airport and back to the burbs - about an 80 mile loop and began to wish my Buell was as trouble free as my Bandit.
