I browsed this forum to look for potential fixes for my girlfriends 01 Blast. Now keep in mind I'm a motowrench of some 20 years. I just purchased the bike for her a few days ago, and rode it home as she has yet to learn to ride. The next day the bike was difficult to start and would only idle for a short period at a time. Never having worked on a Harley product, I consulted the site and suspected the "boot" or a carb problem...REMEMBER...keep your troubleshooting simple, when suspecting a fuel problem, start at the begining......does fuel flow from the petcock....if so is it fresh and clear (remember the new fuels with 10% ethanol, alcohol (which will evaporate over time)attracts water and also is used to boost the octane rating) so when in doubt drain your tank and add fresh fuel....check flow to the carb.....and then open the drain screw or in the case of the 01 Blast remove the airbox and the float bowl, clean the bowl and reinstall....open the petcock to fill the carb and try to fire the bike.....if this has not corrected your problem then I suggest moving on to check the fuel metering (jets). THE REASON FOR THIS POST IS THE BLAST HAS A PECULIAR FUEL CAP DESIGN THAT I SUSPECT AT TIMES CAN ALLOW RAIN OR WASH WATER INTO THE FUEL WHERE IT MAKES ITS WAY TO THE CARB AND SINCE GAS FLOATS ON WATER IT REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THE BOWL CAN HOLD IF YOU EXPERIENCE SIMILAR START RUN PROBLEMS AND STORE YOUR BIKE OUTSIDE OR HAVE RECENTLY RIDDEN IN THE RAIN I BELIEVE IT'S WORTH LOOKING INTO....I REALLY LIKE THE BLAST AND IF I WASN'T 6'2" 220LBS I'D RIDE ONE ...GUESS I'M GONNA LEAVE THIS ONE FOR MY GIRL...HOPE THIS HELPS }} |
