I recently bought a 99 cyclone and the starter was dead when i bought it. It makes a buzzing noise but wont kick over.It seems to make a spinning sound.
I was wondering if i can replace it with a starter from a different buell or sportster? Just trying to avoid the stealership.

1. How good is the battery?

2. If the starter motor spins but doesn't engage the gear on the clutch, the problem may be a defective overrunning clutch that's part of the starter drive.

There are troubleshooting steps in the service manual that can further isolate the various parts of the starter mechanism so that you don't have to step into the Service Dept. But, if you don't have said Factory Service Manual, maybe stepping into the Parts Dept of your favorite HD shop to order one, you'd be doing yourself a favor down the road... (or order one over the phone from one of our BadWeB sponsors); )
