I'm a new Buell owner, love the bike BTW. Yesterday I dropped the bike and discovered I had cracked the primary cover. It looks like the gear shift lever was pressed in and cracked the primary cover - about a half inch crack. I searched the forums and found that someone suggested using metal putty to patch a similar crack. My question: Should I bring it to a machine shop, have it spot welded (from the inside) and then ground/polished down if needed? I'm concerned that the metal putty, even the hi-temp stuff, won't be resilient enough to last. The H-D dealer says it has to be replaced but I don't really feel like spending $230+ on a new cover if I can avoid it. Any thoughts?

I'd remove the cover and have it welded.

Even in your neck of the woods I wouldn't think it would cost over $40/$50 to repair.

If you try the glue first and then take to a welder figure at least half again more money.

Welders really grumble when someone brings them an Aluminum repair that had the JB/Epoxy/Silicone treatment tried first.
