Thanks for the pointers.
Who else had two turbo'd Buells? Was it Jim Witt? I'm sure I remember reading that someone on this board, not Cap, had two as well.

Peter,

There's a Aerocharger on E-Bay for 2000, I think that's a steal for a new unit.

Hein,
Thanks mate. I'll have to get my father to grab a copy and send it over.
I've seen some of their bikes at the drags. Pretty quick. If you ever saw the video of Billy Connelly in Australia, you would remember his Harley trike. That is one of their creations, or someone has copied their design.
I've got the video here if you ever want a good laugh.
When does the restoration/modification start?
Have you got the neck brace of yet, ya cripple?

Notice the location of the dowel pin and the amount of base gasket area. Squeeek! Of course, there is no base gasket so that's not a problem. Here's another from the inside, just in case you thought there was any room left.

freakin' huge

Notice not only the hole for the case bolts (on the right) but the stud that is replacing the center bolt (on the left under the shiny area). The stud cut through by a touch over half. It didn't really come out in the photo, but believe me, there isn't much left.

cam case

Not much to see at first glance but the lifter pin area has been machined down and the pin bores drilled for greater depth. Now the pins are supported on both sides rather than floating. By machining the cases like this you can still use the stock length pins. I also cut the lifter bores for a huge cam lift even though I didn't need the room. All I need now is some time to put the sucker back together.

Sure Jose, there is no base gasket.

Sorry, couldn't pass it up. From what I've been told, there is so little area for a gasket they end up being useless. The cylinder is in direct contact with the case with a layer of Yama-bond to seal them. Remember, I'm using iron cylinders (Axtells best), I don't have to worry about the cylinder squirming all over the place, changing length as it warms up. There is some change in length, but it's small, really small compared with aluminum, also the change is matched with the studs. This is one of the many, many reasons I choose Axtells iron cylinders.

Ralph,
Do yourself a favor, and use 3-Bond#1211 as a cyl.base sealer.Clear your oil drain back slot with a welding rod. Also, put some sealer on the lifter side of your center stud,or it will leak aswell.

Here's all I know. Ron Dickey (Axtell) kows his stuff and makes great engines. I would trust one of his more than a stock one. At the horsepower ratings you quoted, it sounds understressed (which is good) and I think you got a hell of a bike. Stock, that bike made about 60 hp and I've heard of 90ci bikes making a lot more, so it sounds like you got one built for daily riding.

Nice score. Do you have any pics?

Is the "race kit" from Buell dead or will it be back after they engineer a new can? I've got a new '99 X1 and as soon as the 'break in' miles are done, I was planing to race kit it. I guess I could get the race intake and ECM and use a different exhaust but I'd prefer to keep it all "Buell" while I'm still under warranty.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm way out in the boonies but I'll be taking the bike to SoCal to have the "kit"(what ever that becomes) installed, any personal experiences with shops that know their "Buell"?

Chris,

The Buell "race only" kit is not covered under the new bike warranty.........read the fine print, however, the rest of the bike is still covered. I have had problems with my 2000 X-1 and have had no problems with the dealer. The "stock" Buell race exhaust was recalled because of a front mount defect (I tore apart 4). I dont expect it back anytime soon. I eventually wound up with a Force Motors Streetfighter pipe (added about 30% HP) and it sounds awsome. I had race kit installed at the dealer before delivery, and suffered through the break-in period with the race kit in place.

Will post more details re exhaust ordeal if you want............

Later,

Bill

Just to clear up any potential misunderstandings, I have had my race ecm replaced once, and repalced again with a factory Re-mapped version. My dealer, Southeast HD/Buell in Cleveland, replaced all 4 Buell race pipes and ate the extra cost for the Force pipe with no additional charge to me. All together, my X-1 dyno'd at 128 hp at the rear wheel.........

Aaron, Hoser:

Understand that I am still new to the technical aspects of the whole Buell system. The initial mods were the Buell race kit. In my frequent trip to the dealer, I ended up with a Force Products Streetfighter exhaust. Now, the big deal (as I understand it) is in the ECM mapping and resetting of parameters.

According to the engineers at the factory, the root cause of the majority of my performance problems was in my riding style (VERY Agressive).
Since I travelled very long distances (100+ miles) at high RPM's (4500+) in one shot, the re-mapping feature in the ECM was having trouble adjusting to current conditions. As a result of the re-mapping, redline (cutout) is now 7850 RPM, overheat at about 30 deg higher (lots of in town light to light racing), and the 5 sensors for the DDFI are way out of spec compared to stock. Factory sent my dealer new program for computer that allows setup of sensors.

Since I am just now beginning to understand how this thing works, I couldn't begin to tell you exactly what is goin' on in there, but those are the only mods that should have an effect on hp. My copy of dyno printout is lost, but am in process of getting another copy while I'm getting copies of all related paperwork on my bike in preparation to test Ohio Lemon Law!

I really don't want to give up the bike, but I have spent entirely too much riding time sitting at the dealer, or at home, or trailering my bike back from places like Chicago. I don't know if it's a Buell thing, or just my bike.

I LOVE my bike....very fast! I regularly beat the big boys in the Cleveland area...Don't want to give that up.......

As soon as I have more information on dyno, or more specific data on re-mapping, I will post copies............
If anyone knows how I might effectively cut the substantial amount of time I spend wishing I could ride, instead of riding, let me know.........

Bill
