I got tired of cold hands (it was snowing the last time I rode) and excited about the prospect of heated hand grips. In my fever to be warm I ended up misreading the applicable years for the factory heated hand grips... The install went flawlessly until I got to the part where you're supposed to simply plug them into the accessory connector under the windscreen and surprise, surprise, it's not there. So, now I have an interesting challenge: powering the grips without the necessary plug. Any suggestions on how to set this up? | ||

My first inclination is to just run a wire directly from the battery and throw the appropriate DT connector onto the end, but that just seems too easy. Has nobody else done this? | ||

If you did that, and left the switch on, then the grips will kill the battery. Or if a kid (or you) bump the switch, then they will warm up until they kill the battery. If you are worried about too much draw from the accessory fused line, you could run that to a relay, and use the relay to draw power from the line directly to the battery. 50 watt heated grips (which would be REALLY HOT) are only 4 amps. I expect they would run fine off the accessory wire. | ||

Just cut one of the connectors off and splice the heated grips power in with the European headlight line. This light is part of the factory accessory line. | ||

Reepicheep---Good call on the power drain possibility--that would be a HUGE problem. Froggy---I won't have my service manual in front of me again for a few days so ignore this question if it seems downright silly: What exactly is the European headlight line and how would I recognize it? I'm guessing that it's not the same thing as the "HID" wire that sits between the two headlights, or is it? | ||

Not sure why you are calling it a HID wire as it is nothing of the sort, but thats the wire. The headlamps have 4 wires going into it: High, Low, Euro light, Ground. I don't recall what color is what, but you can tap into that Euro light line without any issues.  | ||

I snuck a bulb in there on my 9, it looked cool while only it was on waiting for my delay circuit to power up my HID light (which saves the ballast from bouncing when you start the bike). You could call it a HID light for that reason... its the light on that you can only see when your HID is off | ||

Froggy & Reepicheep: I called it an "HID" because I misremembered what it was called in the Service Manual and suspected that I was misremembering it. Page 2-87 of the 2007 Lightning SM calls it a "Position Bulb Socket (For HDI Only)". I'd always wondered what it was for. Now I know. Thanks! |
