So I just bought a 2004 XB12R used from a dealership. It has an aftermarket can, with no brand name tag on it. It greatly resembles a carbon fiber Jardine, but I'm not positive. The bike also has a K&N air filter on it. It has definitely been remapped (maybe too much) because it smells very rich upon initial start-up, and has lots of power everywhere.

My concern is the header. The header on the XB12 is supposed to be 1.75" diameter, right? The header on my bike is the smaller 1.5". At first I was worried the bike was an XB9 with XB12 decals/badges, etc. But the frame is dark grey, and the VIN# says it's the 12. I am quite convinced it is the 12, but is there any way to tell from the motor itself? I know there is a number stamped right on the motor.

My question is this: Is it better, perhaps, to have the smaller diameter header on the 12 with the free-flowing can and filter? This will cause faster exhaust gases, etc. Or should the bike still have the thicker 1.75" header? Would I notice a difference? Thanks in advance.

Post lots of pics, we can tell you what you have!

I don't see why it would be a 9 if it has the dark frame and title says its a 12. On the 04's, the primary chain cover was magnesium color, while XB9's were black.

Thanks! Will do, I'll try to get some up tomorrow or the day after. My primary cover is magnesium also, and I just found the cable that once hooked up to the interactive exhaust... All these things scream 1200.... So why the small pipes??

If the previous owner had a shop or dealer install the aftermarket can, would they have installed the headers too?? Did they maybe think it would be better? Or maybe they just wanted the 12 headers... Who knows.

These are all the pics I have so far, I'll try to get better pics of the can in a couple days.

P.S. the wheels are red, despite their orange tint in the pictures.

Thanks again for your help and opinions.

Don't know. Do dig your bike's checkered graphics.
Are these original?
Does tach's redline offer a clue?

Thanks, they were actually a big buying point for me. I'm not sure if they were original or not, they were on it when I got it though. I'm in MA and the only other one I've seen with them was on eBay in FL, and i can't remember the year of that one...

The tach says XB12R on it, and it has two yellow lines after 6k, then a red line at 7k and beyond. So the redline appears to be at 7k or just under,

Beautiful. No those checkers and wheels are not original, but it is indeed an 04 XB12.

It is hard to tell if thats the right header or not, something does look out of place on it. This is a XB12 header (ignore the holes! : D )

Thanks! And that is definitely a big relief about it being a 12... Like I said it runs great with the current header, but I'd definitely like to get the bigger header like you pictured... (minus the holes lol). If anyone has one in good shape for relatively cheap, let me know!

As far as the headers that are currently on it, does anyone know what kind of negative/positive effects I'll see from it compared to the larger diameter?
